Q: TMI questions about healing after natural birth...

I'm a first-time mom and plan on going for a natural birth (no epidural either, if I can manage it). I'm really, really worried and terrified about the healing process and keeping things clean down there, namely after stitches or an episiotomy. How much does it hurt to go to the bathroom (number 1 & 2!) while healing after the birth? How do you keep that area clean after a poop? (I can imagine it's pretty painful to wipe, especially if you've had an episiotomy?). Did you/can you use wet wipes? They say you're supposed to keep any stitches dry, so were you able to wash that area in the shower?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I'm absolutely terrified!

All I'm going to say is URAL your best friend I took 1 a day about a week from my birth. Then 3 times a day after the birth, it takes the acidity out of your urine, so it doesn't sting. And try not to stress, this is my 3 rd pregnancy, and my first 2 were completely natural, and I tore a bit with my first, but to tell you the truth, you are to focused on the labour to worry about the pain. I know that makes no sense, but it the only way to explain it. Remember, URAL

They will send you home with items to take care of it. But I will say the witch hazel pads were my best friends. I tore a little and got only 1 external stitch. It didnt bother me to go to the bathroom but if I was just sitting around or walking it hurt a little. Ive got a high pain tolerance, but apparently not for that area.

Good question! I have the same fears!! :( I am almost hoping I need a c-section so I don't have to deal with the aftermath of the birth. I DO NOT want an episiotomy and told my OB that...but truthfully, you don't have a choice if the baby needs it done. SUCKS! I heard from some ladies using a wash bottle as you are peeing helps...so diluting it while your peeing....I am definitely going to try that (should I end up with a natural birth).

when ihad my daughter i had a wonderful labor and delivery...but with her being 9lb 12oz my healing process was QUITE rough! first off i started taring from the inside all the way too my butt, so me thinking about pooping was out of the question...scariest thought ever. when i finally did though it was easy to clean. you just need to take your time and be careful. they sent me home with a squirt bottle and some anti bacteria and non itch spray.

I have also had two natural births with no epidural and didnt need stitches at all. The biggest thing for me was having good communication with my midwife and doing everything she said which she had already prepared me for. Mainly i think it was the no pushing thing. At a certain point the midwife told me to stop and breathe calmy so I did, it did hurt and burn a fair bit but it gave my body time to stretch right when the babys head was there pushing on it. I was left with a small internal graze with both births that heals on its own, I didnt even feel it after the birth as the muscles held it together ( thats what the doctor told me). I would really discuss with your midwife or doctor the worries you have and what plans there may be to help reduce tearing, sorry I cant help with the care of a tear but just wanted to get across that not everyone does tear so try to stay positive :) Good luck xo

I have had two natural births (no epidural) with no episotomy and no stitches. The first time I did tear a little but not enough to need stitches.
I really hurt to pee with the tear so I would suggest taking ural which helps to lower the acidity in your urine. You need to have a lot for it to work. Otherwise you can try all sorts of wondering positions to pee without it stinging!!
Number 2's never seemed to be a problem.
Its a bit tender to wash for a few days so you'll probably only manage to rinse with no actual washing. It will all be fine :)

I had external and internal stitches with my son ...I had natural-water birth but I did tear a little. It was painful but not so much to take any pain killers...Just dont worry too much for the pain ...Sometimes in the first days after delivery to put something cold on the stitches was really helpful. You need to keep that area extreamly clean...I had showers at least 3 to 4 times a day . Also my midwife recommended every time when I have shower to use solution made from water and a little salt .Nobody told me that I have to keep the stitches dry .Also I never had episiotomy
