Is it possible that the crib is a normal size and the mattress is a mini-crib mattress? Try taking the dimensions of the inside of the crib or even of the mattress to compare them to the other mattresses that you find in stores and see if that may be the problem.

I think we've decided to just pick a mattress to go with the crib were registered for and well see how it fits, we can always return it if it doesn't work.
I do believe the mattress we got from the family friend was the standard size, but the crib itself was larger than average. The bumper we tried to put on it didn't fit either, so we know it's the crib, not the mattress. :P

MOST cribs fit a standard size mattress, not sure where your friend got her crib but that could be what the problem is. If you are getting a crib from Target, get the matress from there too. My crib and mattress are both from Target and fit perfectly

We tried putting sheets and bumper on the crib, the mattress was just too small. Just questioning weather they are all different sizes or not.

any crib manufactured after 1978 goes by standard regulations. maybe the mattress is the problem ? apparently if you can fit 2 fingers between crib and mattress, there's too much space. keep in mind that when you get a mattress cover, crib sheets and bumper pads (if you choose to use them) on the mattress, it will fit much tighter.

It was from 2003 (but not a drop crib, and still met all the safety standards) I'm not sure why they didnt fit together, but I will not be using either items. They were free so at least I'm not losing anything out of the deal. Just wanted to know if in general cribs and mattresses were a standard one size. I guess we can always return a new one if it doesn't fit. It's just a pain lol.

I've heard of mini-cribs, but not of any being bigger than standard size. Was it an older crib? I thought all cribs these days are made at a standard size?
