Q: How many ultrasounds do you receive in a 'normal' pregnancy?

I was attending birthing class last night and we had a doctor come and speak to the class, he mentioned that typically his patients get an ultrasound done towards the end of their pregnancies just to see how baby is, it's position, and it's weight. I guess I just assumed I wouldn't be getting any more ultrasounds, but since he mentioned it it keeps coming back to mind. I'd love a last chance to see baby, and to know what to expect weight wise. is this a normal practice or not! Could I ask the doctor to do an ultrasound or would I have to pay extra for it?

I'm 41 weeks and tomorrow i will have my 5th ultrasound. i think 2 or 3 is typical in a normal pregnancy. i had my initial one at 12 wks, then anatomy/gender one at 20wks, a 3d one at 32 wks i believe to measure him, then one at 36 wks to check his position cause he was breech. the one tomorrow is to see how big he's measuring and to check fluid since he's overdue.

I had one at 7 weeks for due date, then my anatomy scan done at 20 weeks, then one more at 23 weeks to confirm gender cuz baby girl was stubborn at my 20 week scan. I wouldn't have gotten the one at 23 weeks if it hadn't been for that. Now I am done with my ultrasounds...unless something comes up between now and the last 10 weeks.

usually you only get 2, and I am pretty sure the 12 week one isnt a must, as its just a dating scan. I had 3 with my first due to a problem, I had 2 with my 2nd and third, I had 2 between 5 and 11 weeks with my 4th due to bleeding which I lost. with this one I had 1 at 7 weeks 1 at 10 weeks and I am due my 20 week scan tomorrow. it probably depends on circumstance your dr and hospital.

Are you American? In Canada, you don't have any more after your 20 weeks. Unless there's a need for followup.

An ultrasound at the initial visit at 8 weeks, one at 12 weeks for dating, anatomy scan at 20 weeks and growth ultrasound at 32 weeks. I am not high risk.

I had one at less than five weeks due to cramping, one at just under ten to estimate my due date, and then one at 21 weeks as my anatomy scan. I am not high risk or anything like that, and my baby has been head down since at least 21 weeks (although it does come out occasionally) I would really like one last one, but feel I'd rather put our money towards baby, than an ultrasound that's not nessicary. So if it's covered, and an option the doctor offers I'd love to do it, but wouldn't go out and do it on my own. Just wondering if people really are offered them at the end or not :P

You should ask your doc if it's normal practice to have an ultrasound near the end of the pregnancy. For mine, I had one at 7 something weeks, and a couple because they needed to check due to spotting or heart beat dropping. Then I had the 13 week NT scan, 19 week anatomy scan. I won't get another until 36 weeks when they check baby for size/position, etc. We paid for a private 3D ultrasound just for fun, too.
