Q: When to have my baby shower?

So here is my situation. My In-laws live 5 hours away and my MIL wants to give me a 2nd shower, I told her she doesnt have to but she insists so please dont think I am being greedy. Our problem is when to have it. My DH and I are both teachers and both coach Indoor track. We were going to have it at the end of Feb,but we have championship meets all Feb that we cannot miss.We then were thinking about in Jan. but that is soo close to Xmas I dont want to burden anyone with having to spend more money. Then we thought about Dec,but I will only be 23 weeks when we could have it. Is that too early?I am due at the beginning of April so I dont want to have it in March because of having to travel 5 hours at 8 1/2 months PG.Anyone have any ideas?Again please dont think I am being greedy,as I didnt ask for a 2nd shower.Thank you in advance for the advice.

I had a similar issue. Both my parents and in-laws live about 6 hrs away and wanted to give me a shower. I am due mid-February, but we are going to do it the weekend after Thanksgiving. I will be there that weekend so it works out for us and I wouldn't worry about the time of year. People will get you what they are comfortable spending.

In January seems like the most convenient time for you. I hear what you're saying about being close to Christmas. February and March would have been the best in regards to not being that close to Christmas. But, your schedule doesn't allow that. January seems like the best possible time.

Frankly, I would just do it around the end of January if you can manage it.

If your main worry with that is "people having to spend more money" after Christmas, think of it this way: if they are going to buy you gifts regardless, you really couldn't pick a better time for a shower than RIGHT AFTER Christmas. Huge clearance sales anyone? (NOT encouraging materialism here, just pointing out the facts).

Alternatively, you could ask your MIL to make it a "handmade" theme, where guests could bring decorated onesies or homemade collages or any other crafty things they can do. Then it's more personal, and doesn't seem like a bid for more pricey gifts.

FWIW, I'm due in March and my sister and best friend are planning on doing my shower in late January, but since my family doesn't do Christmas gifts for adults I didn't see it as a problem. But good for you for thinking about it :)
