Q: My baby has been detected for high risk of trisomy 13 and 18

Me and my husband went in for the nt scan at 12 weeks, a week later we were told our baby has low risk for trisomy 21(downs syndrome) but high risk for trisomy 13(pataus syndrome) and trisomy 18(Edwards syndrome) my baby has a 1:18 chance of having these, my baby also has omphalocele which is a hernia, we are going to see the specialist tomorrow but I feel lost I don't know if I could keep this baby or terminate and move on with my life, it's taken us 3 years to conceive and it's our first so I'm torn. Is there anyone out there that have had this test, had a positive result but had a healthy child? Or any success stories? Please share

Thanks, my husband would like to terminate so that we can start trying again, although he will be fine with wat ever decision I make. I don't really know if I could deal with knowing I killed my child even tho it is ill, but at the same hand I don't really know if I am strong enough to go thru with the pregnancy knowing in the end the chances are my child will die before its first year. It wld be horrible going home after giving birth, with no child. Either way there are positives and negatives with each, I guess I'll have to wait to see wat the amniocentesis says :,-(

im so sorry your going through this!! just remember, ultimately the decision is up to you and your husband.. you may think "how could i kill my baby" but if your young and healthy, theres a good chance you will conceive a health baby in the future..but DEFINITELY have further testing done before making any big decisions.

i have a story similar to the other post.. my cousin was told there was something seriously wrong with her baby and she should terminate the pregnancy,,she decided against it and had TWO very healthy baby girls... this was years and years ago, and the technology was not as good as today..but it shows that there are mistakes made.

The original poster said 1:18 not 1:13. 1:18 is about 5.6%.

Maybe,
Do you feel better after the scan? Is the hernia a separate issue or is it related to these possible trisomies?

" in the end I no I cant intentional keep my baby if she has these trisomys but at the same time I don't think I can live with myself, is that selfish?" Are you asking if it is selfish to NOT keep the baby?

I wish for you that the next two weeks go quickly so you can get some answers from your amnio and of course that those results sway in the most positive way! Thinking about you in this horrible time of limbo.ugh

I just want to say good luck and God bless!!! This decision must be very difficult but remember that it's only a 5% odd chance that something is wrong and 95% chance that your baby would be perfect and healthy!!! Even if your baby is not healthy, your baby will forever be your first and perfect in every way!! I would not be able to terminate because I'm a Christian. I think that worse case scenario, if there is something wrong, your baby can still bless your lives in more ways than you.think, even in a short life of only a year! Remember that with God anything is possible!! Lots of love and hugs xxx

Elaloub-where do you calculate a 5% chance of something wrong. 1:13 is not 5%.

You need to have a CVS if you think there is a chance you would terminate.
They are not telling you that your baby has those disorders. They are telling you that you have a high chance.
1:18 is a little more than 20%. That means 80% all is ok.
Have the CVS and find out definitively.
If I were you and my baby definitively had either of those I would terminate.
I am very sorry that you even need to deal with this.
Hugs.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. This is something a little different, but a friend of mines baby was told that her baby had fluid on the brain and she could have a chance of losing the baby while pregnant or shortly after birth or would not be normal. The brain would not function normally. Well he's now 6 months old and he is a total normal baby. :) Sometimes what doctors may think, they are not always right. It's totally your decision, but what if they are wrong? Would you like to have the time you can with your baby? It might live and have nothing wrong with it and live a normal life. Best of luck.

So had the specialist do a scan today, baby is growing normally although its a little small,( only a week behind) I'm not worried about that yet, but the hernia is defiantly there and the liver and bladder are sitting in it. So I guess so far the hernia isn't that big, baby hasn't got any obvious heart problems or defects apart from hernia. But booked in for amino in 2 weeks, bub, was kicking around and stretching a lot very active, I can feel flutters a lot I know this is her cuz it almost tickles. Now we play the waiting game for the test and results, all the while I grow more attached to a baby I might not be able to have :'-( in the end I no I cant intentional keep my baby if she has these trisomys but at the same time I don't think I can live with myself, is that selfish? Am I putting wat I want before my baby? I hate this!
