Q: Cervical Cerclage

Hello :) I'm only 22 weeks pregnant today but on Monday I went to the hospital because I wasn't feeling the best to get a checkup and was told that my cervix was funneling..When I spoke the the doctors they said that it was only 1cm thick and that they would have to perform a cerclage to stop it from opening..I'm so scared that I'm going to go into preterm labour! I need to at least make it to 25 weeks to be safe..Has anyone else had this happen to them so early and if so what was the outcome? Thank-you xx

I have two other boys who are 12 and 3 and went into preterm labour with both of them..Both were born at 28 and 29 weeks gestation. My first was because of placenta ebruption and my second was because my cervix had diated 3cm at 23 weeks but I managed to keep him in until 29 weeks on strict bed rest. With this pregnancy I asked for the cerclage to be put in at about 13 weeks but they said they would wait until my 18 weeks scan and see what my cervix was doing then. When I had the scan my cervix was the right length so they didn't bother with the cerclage..Anyway at 21 weeks I was just feeling rather heavy and felt like he was coming out but had no pain or bleeding just knew that I needed to be checked. They did a scan at the hospital and it showed that my cervix had started funneling but hadn't dialted any. So they put the cerclage in. They usually don't put one in after 20 weeks but said they would for me. There's usually only 40% success rate with it being done this late. Baby is fin

What do you mean you didnt feel right? I only ask because I am 20 weeks and my family has a history of preterm labor, my mom went into labor with me at 23 weeks. I just wanted to know what I should maybe look for or any odd feelings to be aware of. Glad they are taking care of you though! Good Luck!!

I got a cerclage at 13w and am doing great! I lost a baby @16w in April....they didn't catch it in time. You will be doing some serious bed rest, just like me! Email me any time! Good luck! Xoxo

I've heard of lots of women having to have it sooner than 22 weeks. My mom had to have one when pregnant with me and I was born 3 weeks after they took off the cerclage, I wasn't ready to come out! The good thing is they caught it, and good thing you didn't feel right and went in!!! I think once it is on things turn out fine. Good luck!
