I am also registering before Christmas, just because I want to do it and then people will have the option if they so choose. My brother got something for the baby for my birthday (which is coming up on the 6th, he just told me about it). I wouldn't worry about what other people think, it's a peace of mind for you, anyway.

I am doing the exact same thing. We don't have the money to get big gifts this year for anyone, so we told them not to get us anything either. We are already registered for my shower on Jan. 7, so we told our parents that if they insist on getting us stuff, then just get us stuff off of the registary for the baby.

I plan on at least starting mine after the gender scan, because I feel it will be easier to set up the registry slowly, adding items as we find the perfect options, and then giving people the option just in case they want them. I don't think when you start it really matters. It's not like your having your shower at 23 weeks.

I don't see why that would be a bad idea. I think of a registry not only for baby showers but for buying in-general ... makes things easier. Have fun shopping!!!! ;)

do it! if people want to buy something for the baby anyway, they may as well have the chance to know what you'd like to have, rather than having to guess. congrats!
