I am due 7/3 and baby shower is on 5/18. We are buying all the big things starting next week (crib/stroller/car seat). Our baby registry is just going to be the small essentials (that add up to alot) such as bibs/baby lotion/bath wash/bottles/onesies/etc.). That way nobody feels obligated to buy the big stuff. It may a good idea for you both to start picking up things now as you can go into labor early which is too close for comfort to the baby shower date. Or you can simply change the baby shower if it's not too big a hassle.

I have been shopping since I entered the 2nd trimester. Then when my baby shower comes nobody feels obligated to get the big items and most usually just bring clothes anyways.

I agree with Faye....you should try and change the shower date to an earlier time. That is way too close to your due date! What if you go early? I would play it safe and really try to adjust the date.

I'd start getting essentials like Nb and some 0-3 months size clothes, a few receiving blankets, some diapers and some socks. Other then the car seat that's all our really going to need right off the bat. I wouldn't wait on the essentials though. I went into labor the day off my baby shower at 36 weeks so I'm a bit anal now.
