Q: Salons and Pregnancy

I am going in to get highlights and a hair cut today (i need some pampering major! its not fair so many pregnant women look cute and I look like I came out of a dump lol) Anyways, is there anything I should be concerned about at the salon? Should I mention to the stylist that I am even pregnant as I am not showing?

I am a professional stylist. And to clear one thing up, there are some dyes that are ammonia free but they can only be used if you are coloring your hair a darker color and cannot be used to lighten. The only way to go lighter is with decolorizer (bleach) If you are getting highlights, they absolutely should not touch the scalp, not just because you're pregnant, but because the color will bleed outside of the foils and you will end up with stripes, and there are very few bleaches that are safe for use on the scalp. I would definitely tell your stylist that you are pregnant though, at my salon we actually ask, just because the biggest risk is that the color may react differently due to the hormones and the hair may need to be pretreated. Just be honest with your stylist. Good luck and enjoy pampering yourself :)

Just as the previous commenter said, most salons have ammonia free hair dye. Also, if you are doing highlights, you should avoid bleaching hair to do the highlights.

Yes, tell the stylist that you are pregnant. Most salons have ammonia free products and she/he will make sure the highlights don't touch your scalp.
