Q: Air travel during early pregnancy?

Hello! I very recently found out I'm pregnant so this is planning a bit ahead. Both our families live about 2000 miles away across country, and when the time comes I have my heart set on telling everyone in person that we're expecting. I am figuring to wait at least until we hear the first fetal heart tones to make the big announcement, but obviously to do so in person involves flying. I'm concerned however about safety to the baby if I fly so early in pregnancy, I've read that there are low levels of radiation in a plane at altitude, and also there is the big scanning machines at the security checks emitting unknown levels of who knows what.
So my question is this, has anyone here talked to their doctor about air travel in early, or even mid pregnancy? Have you read any research you could point me towards? Any other helpful advice on the topic? I won't be seeing the doctor for a little while yet, but I'm trying to plan ahead since airfare get's $$$ the longer you wait to book!

hello dear,
air travel is not dangerous. you don't have to be so worried. You can take your needful material with you, though. Such as a few pillows and energy drinks. If you feel uneasy at any point, please call for the air ambulance if the air hostess' couldn't help.
Stay safe and travel safely.

I flew the day before finding out I was pregnant and went through the scanner. A week later on the way home from vacation, I asked to be pat down instead of going through the scanner. There really isn't any evidence either way about the full body scanners and pregnancy, so I just chose to be safe. I just went to the doctor this week (6 weeks after finding out) and baby looks great!! If you feel more comfortable not going through the scanner, just ask to have a pat down (they do it on the other side of scanner with a female employee) and good luck telling your family!! Very exciting!!

It's completely fine. The amount of the machine is less than if you were flying and the amount flying is very, very small. You aren't a flight attendant so you don't have to worry about exposure building up or anything. I did plenty of research, my doctor said it's fine, and those scanners emit waves that don't even penetrate past the skin. Enjoy planning your trip and have fun traveling while you're still comfortable!
