Q: Can I have diet smoothies instead of eating?

So lately I haven't been wanting to eat at all for no reason. I was wondering if it was safe to drink the smoothies that thicken in your tummy that make you less hungry and limit your daily intake?
Before being pregnant I starved myself for a week at a time due to weight issues and I was thinking maybe my subconscious is making me do this without realizing as I havent starved myself since I found out I was pregnant.

Is there any way for me to at least force myself to eat as now I am gagging just at the thought of food.

I just wanted to apologize for coming off the way I did. The weight issue comes up so much from all of us (myself included) and even though you say that's not your issue, it still does come up here all of the time. I feel bad that so many of us struggle with it and it becomes an obsession and I wonder, why do we go through it? So many woman either can't conceive or take so long to conceive, then we get pregnant and beat ourselves up to a pulp when we gain weight or gain a little too much, etc. I gained over 70lbs with my first which devastated me. I just hate that, but since you say that's not your issue, again, I apologize if I'm wrong. But if you do don't be ashamed either. We all have our issues, myself, I'm full of depression/anxiety. If that, like any other issue, I could control, I would. I just wish we could all be more comfortable with ourselves and realize, hey, I'm not perfect nor am I going to be, but I'll try to be the best I can with my baby. Sorry again :) GL

I don't see where the problem is here. You're well aware of what's going on with your body/pregnancy and you're asking for advice. THAT'S GREAT! Don't take a healthy pregnancy for granted but you don't have to put yourself in a protective bubble either. With my first pregnancy, I had everyone on my ass for eating McDonald's french fires like every day. I couldn't eat afternoon meals until I had those fries! Granted I had an extra 20 lbs after I delivered, my baby boy was perfect!
I think you should try the smoothie thing that everyone is suggesting. If this is something that's subconscious you might be able to trick yourself. If not, they have pre-made nutrition drinks like Special K's that aren't full of all the diet crap. It may not be the healthiest thing for you right now but it's not the worst thing either. Just keep trying to find something you can eat, take your vitamins, and don't use the shakes as a regular meal replacement. Your doc might even offer you Zofran if needed.

I'm sorry you are struggling with your appetite, I was really sick up to 20 weeks, and it can be miserable to eat when you really don't want to, whether that is because of the pregnancy or your subconscious. Regardless, I agree with you that you've got to make yourself get nutrition.

Diet shakes that fill you up but don't actually have much in the way of nutritional content are not going to be good for you. I agree with some of the other ladies about making your own shakes, that saved me through my roughest weeks, and even now I drink a lot of them just to maintain calories, because I'm not hungry for anything but sweets, which aren't good for baby! My doctor really likes my combo of whole-milk, protein powder (I use Teras Whey, it's a little gentler on the stomach than some of the bodybuilder ones, and rgbh free) or greek yogurt, spinach, banana, berries, and tbsp of nut butter. I find that I can drink that a lot easier than eating, especially when I'm busy! Good luck!

If you really want a smoothie, maybe they go down easier,
have regular plain yogurt add a bunch of fruit of your choice and some ice and blend it together! That way you're still getting some nutrients and you're getting some of your fruit for the day too! I'm going to go home and make one on my break :)
Maybe diet smoothies aren't the best, but regular ones like the one I mentioned above won't do any harm to your baby!

Diet shakes are not a good idea while pregnant. There are way too many artificial sugars and chemicals! You should not be purposely losing weight at all! Smoothies to get the calories you need are usually ok, but you need more nutrients and protein than just those can provide! Please consult with your doctor about this. I've been really sick this pregnancy and it's been hard for me to eat. But sometimes you just have to force yourself to stay healthy.
On a side note, starving yourself for a WEEK is far from healthy, and can be indicative of an eating disorder. Please get the advice of your doctor, and inform them of all the details of the situation!

It sounds like you have an eating disorder honey. And it's okay. I do too. I'm a diagnosed bulimic with anorexic tendencies. So I KNOW how crappy it is to have to eat even if you don't want to. But think of it this way: You've got a precious life in you, which could be a new start! It's a reason to recover from your eating disorder. It's tough, and I too am struggling but we can both do it. We just have to put our babies first in our mind, not calories, or numbers on the scale. There's time to lose weight AFTER the baby comes out. But for now, just enjoy being pregnant and enjoy knowing that you're eating to keep your baby healthy, and that's all that matters right now! First of all I am not getting involved in the convo above, as it just very negative.

If you are unable to eat, it is better to have one of those pg meal drinks. i absolutely do not believe that is ok ever to have the diet type ones as there will be chemicals in them to suppress your appetite and that is not what you want. You just want to be able to get some nutrients in vs nothing. So I strongly advise you NOT to have any diet type drink at all. I also advise that you try and have something to eat, and not rely on these drinks because you will end up stealing from your store in the end and can make you very ill. When in doubt taik to your Dr about it.

Another really good way it to do the drink way is to get yourself a decent protein powder and add milk and berries to it, and make yourself some thing. At least you know what is going in to it. Some other really healthy things you can add that you won't be able to taste over the berries are carrots, bananas and spinach.

If you don't give a "fuck" about your body image, then why did you do that prior to conception? If you don't want advice from every realm, then don't ask the fucking question. I'm an honest person, and if you can't deal with that sorry, but that is your problem. I did apologize in advance if you read my second message, if I was understanding you incorrectly, but your question sounded like you have an issue. If you don't have an issue, you should take it with a grain a salt. Besides, you know your body, at this point even for me, I'm eating smaller portions, but more often to maintain I get what I need for the little one. And if you want some private conversation, then don't post a fucking question on here and talk to someone else. Good luck to you.

I'm feeling the same little pea to the extent I'm having to force myself to eat when I'm not hungry and end up feeling sick iv think some folk just lose there appetites when pregnant it happened with my other 2 aswell, my midwife said I'm fine to eat a little amount and drink more full fat milk which I already do because the heartburn x

You shouldn't be eating diet anything when you are pregnant. It does not have the nutrition you need. You can have smoothies if you are having a hard time getting food down but they need to have lots of protein (meaning yogurt based and added protein powder) and you need to watch the sugar. Try to sneak veggies in there, too. If you are really not interested in eating because you don't want to gain weight then you need to talk to your midwife to make sure that you get the help you need to sustain a healthy pregnancy. There is a reason that you are holding yourself back-you need to find it, discuss it with someone, and conquer it so you can truly embrace being pregnant.
