Q: When did you start to show/need maternity clothes?

This is my first pregnancy, and I don't have much experience with friends' and relatives' pregnancies either, so I'm hoping that you ladies can shed some light for me :)

I'm 5 weeks today, 5'2" and 95lbs. Most of my pregnancy will be in spring and summer, so I know I'll eventually need things like shorts, skirts, tank tops, etc. But, should I start checking the winter clearance for a few cool-weather items, or just make do with my bigger/stretchier non-maternity clothes until April?

In case anyone finds this from a search page, I thought I would update now that I'm 19 weeks: I've been wearing my most comfortable jeans with a hair tie since 6 weeks, and in the last week or 2 started alternating with a pair of full panel maternity jeans from H&M (with the panel folded down). So much more comfortable without a waistband, but I wish I had gotten the under belly elastic jeans instead. I noticed a tiny "real bump" and my shirts getting a little short around 15 weeks, but I'm still wearing the longer/looser of my normal shirts, and no one but my husband can tell so far even though I feel like it's super obvious! (Nurse at my 18 week appt said, "18 weeks?! Girl, where you hidin' that?!? " Haha.) Now that summer stuff is coming out in stores, I'll start stocking up on some basics, because I think I'm going to outgrow all my normal size clothes soon!

My first pregnancy I was 5'7" and 125lbs and needed maternity clothes around 26 weeks. The second however I needed them at 17 weeks! My boobs have always been tiny and didnt really change with pregnancy so I didnt really need to buy shirts until 35 weeks (then only wore them for 3 weeks) and pants at 26 just for comfort!

You're the same size I was with my first pregnancy! 5'0'' 100 lbs. Anyways, I only gained weight in my belly area so needed maternity shirts around the time of 26 weeks. Didn't need maternity pants until about 33 weeks. I still fit in my size 1 jeans but just hooked a rubberband or hair tie through the button hole until then.

You probably won't need much in the way of maternity clothes until about 4 months & even then it will mainly be bottoms for comfort. I'm 5'1& I need pants a lot sooner than tops. Right now, you're probably experiencing a lot of bloating, but once that subsides, it takes a while for your actual bump to come in, esp since this is your first. You really don't start to get the big ol baby bump until third trimester. Congrats on your pregnancy!

You will probably won't need any maternity clothes until 4 or 5 months. I don't think it is worth buy lots of winter maternity clothes. You can use your own cloth and use the "Belly Belt" and/or the "Tummy Sleeve". You can find both in Motherhood. They will help you use your clothes a little bit longer.
Good luck!
