Q: Healing from 4th degree tear

My baby was born late October and over 5 months later I'm still struggling to heal. I had 3rd degree tears and was stitched up by my ob. A week postpartum I caught a cold and ruined my stitches from the coughing. I was referred to a surgeon and in January I was recut and restitched. Essentially 4th degree tears. Saw my surgeon yesterday and it's still inflamed and is tender along with some tmi issues. He mentioned that if I don't heal properly within 3-4 months he would do more surgery to recut and restitch and mentioned a colostomy bag. Nooooo way! I feel like I'm at my wits end and I need to know how long others have taken to heal from a 4th degree tear and what you did special to recover. Did you apply anything to it or do something special? I can't wait to be normal again!!

I had a 2nd degree tear, so not nearly the hell you've had to go through (I'm so sorry it's been such a rough time!!). I took stool softeners to help with not straining during bowel movements. I soaked in a warm bath with epsom salts each evening for a couple of weeks. I also used pads soaked in witch hazel then frozen and wrapped in a small towel if I was sitting down (like while breastfeeding). Also, if it started to get sore I'd use Dermaplast spray. Definitely check with your doctor before doing any of those though, just to make sure it's ok with your particular case!

I really hope you heal up soon! I know you must be so miserable right now!
