Q: Has anyone had an ultrasound done to determine baby's weight in the third trimester?

I'm currently 35 weeks and I went in for an ultrasound to determine my baby's weight, apparently he is 6 lbs. 6 oz. so he's big. My doctor said the baby will gain about one pound a week and said he will induce me at 39 if I don't go into labor before that. That will put my son around 9 pounds or so.
Just want to know if anyone else has had these ultrasounds done and if your baby's weight was close to what the doctor said. I'm still in shock since I've only gained 8 pounds this whole pregnancy.

UPDATE:
Just wanted to update for other ladies. I had my baby boy around 39 weeks and he weighed 7lbs. 7oz. So I wouldn't go by ultrasounds for weight.

My cousin had an ultrasound done the day she had her baby at 27 weeks they said she weighed 1 pound 15 ounces and when she was born, she weighed 1 pound 10 ounces I think ultrasounds are more accurate for measuring weight earlier in the pregnancy before the baby is all smashed in the uterus. We were told at our 32 wk appt that our daughter was 4 pounds and the doctor told us she would weigh somewhere around 7 pounds. She was born at 39 weeks 3 days weighing 7 lb 1 oz.

They were going to induce me with my first because he measured 9.5 pounds at 37 weeks. The doc said ultrasounds can be off by up to 2 pounds, which made me think "11 pound baby????". My son was born after I went into labor naturally (before the induction) and only weighed 7.5 pounds.
Also, babies don't necessarily gain 1 pound each week, it varies greatly.

Also, I only gained a total of 9 lbs the whole pregnancy, so your weight gain isn't indicative of baby size. They told me had my first gone to term, she would have been over 9 lbs.

With my first, I had an u/s done at 32 wks & she was already weighing in at 5 lbs 7 oz. My water broke at 36 weeks, & she was 7 lbs 4 oz, so it was accurate in my case. I was told they start gaining an oz per day starting around 35 wks, which is only about half a lb per wk. Regardless, my Dr still does not recommend inducing to reduce the risk of c section since induction raises the risk by 50% anyway. I wouldn't worry about it. Women have been having big babies since the beginning of time & there's no guarantee the u/s was accurate in the first place. Hope you have a smooth delivery!

I had an ultrasound done at 40 wks, just to make sure the baby was a decent weight so the OB could go forward with my induction (I requested one becuz he was going on vacay at Xmas and I didnt want to drive 30mins to another city to have my baby with a doctor I didnt know). Anyways, weight came up at 6lbs ("late 5's early 6's" is what I was told). They induced that day and when he came out 2 days later, he was 8lbs 8oz. Everyone was completely shocked and not expecting that. Idk if it was due to the time and quality of equipment (13+ yrs ago) or the fact that it just cant accurately read a weight when baby is all smooshed up in there, but in my case, it was off by 2.5lbs and left me with one heck of an episiotomy scar and forcep assisted birth.
I wouldnt trust/worry about the 1lb/wk gain thing either, thats a lot of weight per week, most say half a pound is avg.
Best of luck with everything, I hope it all works out in the end! =))

I had a scan done at 36 weeks and they said that my baby weighed 6lbs 8 at that time, I'm having another scan done at my 40 week appointment(which is in 5 days) to check to see how big he is then. There are no plans though to induce early based on his size, they don't tend to do that here unless there is something medically wrong. With my daughter they told me that she'd be at least an 8lb baby but she weighed 6lb 15. I think it's all abit hit and miss and just coincidence if they get it right. Good luck with your babies birth and I hope it goes smoothly for you.

With my first they talked me into an induction based off of a weight estimate on a third trimester scan. It was done a few days before my due date and said the baby was over 12 pounds. I went with the induction, which failed and ended with a c-section and an 8 pound baby. The doc at the hospital who delivered me, who wasn't my OB said the estimates are rarely correct and often off by more than 1-2 pounds. I don't know if that's true or anecdotal, but it stuck with me.
