Q: 2 vessel umbilical cord picked up at 20 week scan, anyone had any experience of this? Am panicking!

Went for my 20 week scan today and detected 2 vessel umbilical cord instead of 3, all else seemed ok but the sonographer said a referral to a consultant will be needed. I am seriously panicking now, can't help but worry. Any other mums out there had any experience of this, what's the normal procedure that is followed? Thanks

I had the same thing with my daughter, they just kept an eye on it through extra ultra sounds just to make sure she was growing like she was suppose to. I have a healthy 5 year old now and no effects what so ever. Hope that helps.

It can be a marker for certain things but it also can just occur in normal healthy babies. I would not worry until you have further testing (Easier said then done, I know) But its a good sign that they haven't picked up any other markers.

Also, when I was researching I came across several articles that mentioned this as a soft marker for Down Syndrome. A little more digging revealed that this is BS. Many kids w/Down Syndrome may have had 2 vessel cords, but that doesn't mean kids with 2 vessel cords are more likely to have Down Syndrome, if that makes sense. My doctor told me that she's had three other patients that year who had 2 vessel cords and all of them had totally healthy babies.

I had this with my last pregnancy. Of course I googled and freaked out. If i remember right the most common issues to come along with this are heart problems and kidney problems but most of the time there are no problems at all. My father died from a heart problem which was a birth defect that went undetected so I was CONVINCED my DD would have this problem. No, she was absolutely fine. I had to have extra tests done and a few extra ultrasounds(one by a specialist who took a closer look at her heart/kidneys and one at 36 weeks to check her growth). I had low amniotic fluid at the 36 week scan and one of her kidneys appeared to be enlarged. I had to have NSTs every week until I gave birth. I gave birth on 8/16/13 to my 6lb 8oz baby girl. They did an ultrasound on her kidneys which turned out normal. She is now a rambunctious almost 1 year old with no problems, met all her milestones early or on time so far. This is a very common occurrence, try not to stress.
