Q: Going to travel at the time of pregnancy

Next month I am going to Germany with my husband. I am 22 weeks pregnant. I think in this situation insurance is must. What would be best for me travel insurance or health insurance? I am not sure does German government provide health insurance for traveler? I am not sure what I have to do? Please someone help me.

I echo what was said before (especially regarding making sure baby would be covered in the event of premature labour), and I would add, check whether there is a number of weeks after which you are NOT covered by your insurance. Over here it seems like all insurance exclude pregnant women after a certain week....

Please really look into the specifics of any policy that you purchase. Here recently there was a lot of news about a woman who went into premature labour while on holidays in Hawaii. They couple ended up with a bill for almost $1 million. They had insurance and had been given the OK to travel by her doctor before leaving. Insurance denied the claim because the baby wasn't covered under the policy and the mother had a preexisting condition (a UTI)

This article outlines some of the things you might want to think about http://business.financialpost.com/2014/11/22/avoid-having-your-own-million-dollar-baby-what-pregnant-moms-need-to-know-about-travel-insurance/

In particular, you should look into what would happen if you were to deliver while traveling (worst case scenario I know!). The baby would be premature and would require a lot of medical help. Would the baby be covered by your insurance? Or how can you insure the baby once they arrive?

Thanks everyone for helping me.I also got some information about health insurance in Germany. One of my German Facebook friend recommended me to visit http://www.covomo.com/health-insurance-tourists-info/ . I got some information from this site. It is saying that i can get health insurance under one condition, I have to provide my European Healthcare Insurance card. So as a citizen of EU, I think i will get health insurance easily.

I am a travel agent and work for Flight Centre the biggest travel world wide, you need Travel Insurance it covers medical but all policies are different and unwritten differently, you will need to check all their clauses on pregnancy. You will also need a letter from your doctor starting that you are allowed and fit to travel and how far a long you are, you cannot travel without travel insurance, if you end up in hospital it could cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hope this helps. Oh the premiums will be costly but you have no choice, you have to have it, just shop around.

That would largely depend on the plans being offered. Travel insurance usually covers things like damaged or lost possessions and may or may not include health coverage in emergencies. You'll have to do your research to know for sure. As for what Germany covers, you'll have to check with the embassy to be sure, but it's better to play it safe and make sure you have some health insurance coverage. Most European countries do treat emergencies, but do not expect it to be free. Again, research is key as you will have to see what each company/plan has to offer.

Best of luck!
