Q: Contraceptives after birth.

Other than condoms, I have only ever been on the pill for about a month back when i was 16 and that was more to help with period pain than protection.
After the nightmare morning sickness of this pregnancy I have decided i no longer want a huge family. I have my two pickles and that's plenty.
I've been tempted to ask for an op but I worry I'd change my mind but then I'm getting on in age and would like to enjoy my children growing up rather than growing new ones. So complicated.
Anywhoo...
I'm not sure what other contraceptives are out there and what 'maintenance' or side effects they have plus their compatability with breastfeeding.
Any advice or experiences ladies?
Thank you x

After my first I was given a special BC pill that they said wouldn't interfere with breast feeding. It only had one of the hormones that typical BC pills have, but I can't remember which it had. You took it just like a normal BC pill.

Thanks ladies, thats given me a lot of help. I always find its better to ask other ladies with experience as Drs have the knowledge but not first hand. Plus I've found they just recommend what they are told to rather than what might be best for me.
I'll still talk it over with the midwife and hubby.
Thanks again x

Long story short, no maintenance, no side-effects(for me personally, just a shorter lighter period), and caused no problems whatsoever with breastfeeding due to not having hormones.

I would highly recommend a non-hormonal IUD which I used for many years between all my pregnancies with 100% effectiveness. I believe it is called a Paraguard(sp?) I have personally enough crazy issues without adding hormones to the mix, and the IUD without hormones is just as effective and will cause you less side effects. They can be left in for up to ten years, can't feel a thing(you or hubby), and I have absolutely no complaints about it all three times I used it between kids. Good thing about the non-hormonal IUD is that SHOULD you decide in the future to have more children, you can get pregnant immediately after removing it without having to wait for hormones to clear out of your system. I'm on my 4th pregnancy and currently having a shit time right now(temporary, I hope) so I've been thinking the same. You can get it put in very shortly after delivery too(cervix needs to be slightly open to put it in place). Happy birth control hunting(haha)!

I have Mirena IUD and it is awesome! It didn't affect my breastfeeding and it was easy to put in. I love it because if I decide I want to have more, I can just take it out. Also, I haven't had a period since I had my daughter in December. I just quit breastfeeding, so we will see if it stays away. The Mirena is supposed to make periods lighter and some women don't even have a period with it.

We're in a similar boat :) Don't want to be pregnant again for at least a couple years, and even then we may decide not to have more kids. Pregnancy is just too tough on our family and I don't know how we'd get thru that with two kids. It's been 2 1/2 weeks since i had my girl, and I've started the mini pill, which has way less hormones so it doesn't get in the way of breastfeeding. At my 6 week check up I'm having the doc insert Mirena. He suggested it because it's also fine with breasfeeding in most cases, and can stay in for a couple years, or come out if we changed our minds. It also doesn't have as high of a history of causing weight gain and hormone imbalance craziness lol. I was on Nuvaring before and I liked it...except the hormone crazies and my 40lb weight gain!
