Category: Is It Safe?

Asked by tresbesos31

Q: Hi ladies! I need some advice about highlighting my hair in the first trimester.

I have of course trolled the internet and read many articles on how safe or unsafe highlighting hair is. I am in the first trimester, and I just wanted some of your opinions. I have my first ob appointment today and will ask my doctor, but I know you ladies are knowledgeable as well! So what do you think ladies? To highlight our not that is the question. :-)

My hair goes blue. Has been dyed a few times since it fades easily since finding out I'm pregnant. Baby is just fine so far :) worst thing has been the nausea triggered from the smell.

I've dyed my hair in all my pregnancies and all my babies are perfect. Just crack a window if you're doing it yourself, otherwise if you're in a salon they'll have that taken care of. I wouldn't worry about it:) It's more of a personal decision than anything else cuz there's really no proof that it causes any issues.

There is nothing to say its safe or unsafe but you've probably already read that lol. They say to wait till you're in the second Tri as there is crucial developments that could be affected by the tiny amount of chemicals that could be absorbed through the skin (not the hair). Other than that caution its all about the fumes overpowering you, making you sick or because of the hormones you could react differently to the chemicals having an allergic reaction or your hair may not act the same as it did before you were pregnant.
I waited till the second trimester but it's your personal choice when you decided to do it.
Either way crack open the window, wipe of anything that touches the skin straight away, try to keep it off your scalp and make sure you do a skin allergy and strand test well before hand.
I went bright pink in the second tri with my son and topped it up every fortnight till he was born and he's fine.
With this one I bleached my hair and went blonde.

Lots of women dye their hair without a problem. It's one of those things that they say is "probably safe" because obviously they have no studies on it. I'm on the (very) paranoid side when pregnant and choose not to dye my hair, but your doctor will certainly tell you it's fine.
