Q: Probability of twins - just curious

I am newly pregnant and am just curious about all these ultrasound pictures I've seen of twins. Did it run in your family? It runs on my husbands side and not mine. Does that matter. I have an appointment 1/8/15 and I really don't think I'm carrying twins but I just wondering about all of you who have had twins.

I's having twins, but it's due to fertility and it's my understanding that twins needs to run on the mother's side and it skips a generation.

I've been told that I have a 12-25% chance of having twins because fraternal twins run in my family and so do the things that go with it. I have a naturally very high estrogen level because I ovulate like it's going out of fashion. If it doesn't run in your family, you're probably fine. You should look at how the women biologically related to you fared if you want clues about how it will go for you.

My biggest fear is being told "I hear two heartbeats". Not only do twins run in my family, they're BIG twins. My grandmother was a twin. She and her brother were over 8lbs each... Yikes!

If twins run on his side then you do not have an increased chance. Apparently identical twins do not run in families according to statistics and fraternal twins run in a woman's family because it relies on hyper ovulation is more than one ovulation (egg) per cycle being released so dad has nothing to do with it there. The only other thing that increases it is fertility drugs obviously but other factors include, family history, mother age (over 35), mothers ethnicity, mothers bmi, how many pregnancies' you've had (more pregnancies higher odd of multiples), and breast-feeding. But over all the odds are pretty low, there are some sites with calculators that ask these questions and tell you if you technically have increased odds of having twins. Best of luck to you and your little one. Congrats!

Yes it has to be your side to matte, otherwise the chances are very low. I'm only having twins due to ivf

It's your side of the family that would determine twins, and if you are not undergoing fertility treatments the chances of twins are pretty low.
