Q: How many bottles do you need?

How many bottles do you suggest? I know I need to get a variety of different ones because the baby might only like a particular one.

I haven't had a baby in 5 years so I forgot...

So far, I have 6 Dr. Browns, 6 Parent Choice, 2 Avent... didn't know if I needed more and if so what brand?

i used playtex ventaires. they have a bend in the part that holds milk to promote an upright feeding position. which somehow aids in preventing ear infections or something. there's a venting disc at the bottom of the bottle so the air circulates behind the milk, instead of in the milk. great for reducing air intake- pain in the ass to wash unless you have a dishwasher. you've got loads of bottles for now, i wouldnt buy anymore til baby gets here and you find out how many bottles you go through in a day, what bottle baby likes, etc. when my son started taking 6-7oz i think we had 12-15 large bottles for him.

I bought the 12 Dr. Browns at a resale store and just bought new nipples (very inexpensive), I bought the 2 avent on sale after Thanksgiving and the 6 pack of Parents Choice were cheap bottles from Wal-Mart... I only bought them because with my son (5 years ago) that was all he would take. It was nice because they were so cheap!!

I am not breastfeeding so no need to worry about special bottles or anything.

Did you buy large packs? I would get maybe one or two of the brands you would like to try rather than big packs and opening/washing them all before you know. That way if you decide to return them it's easier. I bf my baby and when I was ready to start introducing a bottle I used Tommee Tipee because the nipple was most shaped like a breast. Obviously every baby and mommy have different ideas and opinions. You don't really need a ton to start though. And if you need more it could be a good way for dad to feel more involved or you to step out of the house if you need to.

That sounds like enough to me! My son had a very bad spitting up problem that the pediatrician wasn't concerned with because he was gaining weight-but trust me, it was terrible. We had the playtex drop ins to start with and one day I just decided to switch since every formula and my breast milk didn't stop it (he was about 7 or 8 months old) and it was just a cheap generic Gerber bottle. The spit up slowed to what a normal baby would do! So, even that right there is a reason to have more than one kind!

I've always preferred Playtex Drop-Ins for when I pumped or when I eventually stopped breast-feeding. And you can start out with 4 or 6 oz. bottles, unless your baby is a total chow-hound, lol. Babies don't usually take a full 8 oz. for a while. The drop-in deflates as the baby drinks and it really cuts down on the amount of air they take in. As far as how many you need, I'd say you have more than enough, unless you decide to get a different brand. Cuz you figure you'll wash them nearly right away or they get nasty so most likely you won't have a sink full of 12 dirty bottles, lol. I'd have more nipples than bottles around too. You need to replace them after a while cuz they get weak. I'd say you're plenty prepared in the bottle department;)

That's probably enough to start. It may depend on your breastfeeding options as well (more breastfeeding, less bottles or visa versa). I think we had 9 or 12 bottles of the small size and when we graduated to the larger size maybe just 9. I didn't buy the bulk of them until I figured out which baby liked. I may have needed more bottles than average though because we had trouble breastfeeding, so we'd feed at the breast, then supplement with pumped milk, then supplement more with formula. Eventually I ended up combining the pumped milk and formula into one bottle, but to begin with they were separate.
