with transvaginal ultrasounds, they slip a condom like cover on a wand camera, covered with lubricant and they ask you to insert it into your vagina. you don't shove it all the way up to your cervix! only the tip goes in. so i dont see how there's even a remote possibility of your cervix being irritated. i had an abdominal u/s at 12wks and my tech had trouble getting the pictures she needed so she switched to the transvaginal wand. much clearer pictures, much better view. if you're hoping to see a heartbeat this early, your best bet is your tech using a transvaginal wand.

I had my first ultrasound at almost 8 weeks, and even then they couldn't find the baby or heartbeat through the top of my abdomen. They switched the an internal ultrasound, and quickly found the beating heart. Point is, if they don't do an internal for you, and they don't find the heartbeat OR baby through the abdominal ultrasound, don't fret. It's really early in your pregnancy. Best of luck to you!

Hi thanks for all your responses. It is an abdominal not internal, where i live they try and avoid trans vaginal iv heard to avoid irritating the cervix or something. Whether they will do internal after i don't know but if they cant see anything i believe i will just be told to go back a week later or something. Id love some reassurance things will be okay thats all but i'm preparing that i may not get it yet with it being so early!
Thanks for your replies :)

They will do an internal at 5w5d for you. I've had 6 pregnancies and always seen a HB between 5w6d and 6w2d. Before 11 weeks I've always had internal u/s.
I've had weekly scan with a lot of my preg due to m/c's and often at 5w5d just a sac and a yolk sac and when I've gone back a few days later a HB. It's really best if you can hold off until 6 weeks plus to avoid panic and disappointment. They won't see anything that early unless it's an internal u/s. GL

Just wanted to add that you might want to be mentally prepared for a transvaginal ultrasound as well. I've gone for ultrasounds early on (not as early as you but at 6w5d) and they usually ended up switching from an abdominal one to a transvaginal one.

I don't know what the earliest is, I was 9 weeks and 3 days when I had my first abdominal ultrasound and saw the heartbeat. Good luck!
