Q: Sweet Smelling Urine?

I am sorry if this is TMI and I am not sure if I am just crazy but for the past few days when I pee I swear it smells sweet, or like burnt sugar. I have never had a UTI in my life and don't seem to have any other symptoms of one.

I have had a few friends tell me that I could have extra glucose in my urine but I am only 4-5 weeks along, isn't that a little early for gestational diabetes?

This is my first pregnancy so maybe this is normal? Has anyone else experienced this?

Just because you are spilling sugar into your urine, doesn't mean you have gestational diabetes. I'd up your protein intake though and watch the carbs. It'll balance you out if you are leaning that way. If you are fit or have a high metabolism, you process sugar (this can be juice, starches, etc.) so quickly that the increased metabolism of pregnancy causes you to spill it into your urine. The OB will check you for glucose intolerance at 10 wks if you are still spilling sugar, then you'll know for sure. When it happened to me, they had me up my protein to 75-90 grams a day and it stopped within a week.
