I'm buying stuff in a variety of sizes but mostly in bigger ones (6 months and up, even up to 24 months). This is our first and I've found that people tend to gift newborn or 3 month clothes, and so I'm not buying so much of those sizes.

I don't think it hurts to be prepared - if I see a larger size at a good price I buy it. I know that she'll be fitting into it eventually. It depends of course how much room you have to store too-large sizes (we're just using plastic bins in the nursery closet), but I'm approaching it like she'll need 3-4 complete wardrobes for the first year and am picking up things as I see them (ex. end of season sales are great - I picked up a lot of 9 month winter clothing this year as she'll be around that size next year).
