Q: Inducing labour at 37 weeks

Hi Guys,

Im currently on 36 weeks and the doc wants to check me regularly and plans to induce labour as soon as i dilate 1 cm and hit 37 weeks as the babys weight has been the same for 3 weeks. I feel fine... feel the baby move and all but they want it to grow. They're going to keep an eye on the growth but I get a feeling they won't wait.

My amnotic fluid is at the lowest level of normal..

My concern is .. is inducing labour so early safe? The baby is at the right position for 36 weeks but if they induce at 37 n the baby is at the position of 37 weeks.. how much am i going to have to push.. It's my first child n im worried if I can do it..

Any advice would be appreciated

Sorry ran out of room. The labour could be very very long for you so prepare for this as they're talking about inducing you at 1cm so first they will try 3 rounds of gel one at a time seeing if that starts labour they may break your waters then if no luck then the IV if still no luck then a csection once an induction is started there's no going back. I would not worry about your baby being ready or in the right position 37w is okay and they're obviously concerned for you medically as you mentioned. You'll be fine just be prepared for a long night and day.

So I'm going to be honest. With an induction it should only be used for good medical reason which in your case appears to be the case. The risk of being rushed in for an emergency csection is high with it being your first baby. Often when it's your first the induction is not always successful as your body has not experienced labour and birth before. However it doesn't mean to say that the gel won't work. If you have to have the IV to encourage labour to begin and the gel doesn't work. They will often give or offer you an epidural. Because you are lying down this is when they can sometimes decide a csection is the best option as the epidural often causes the baby heart rate to drop with an epidural during induction. I know all this as I too am 36w and booked for an induction at 39w due to medical reasons and I have the best OB at my hospital she's the head & went through it all last week for me.
If everything runs smoothly for u. The pushing would be the same. GL
