Q: Road trip while pregnant with a 5 year old and 11 month old

My husband and I are taking out kids to Texas at the end of June to visit one of my best friends. I will be about 19 weeks along. My oldest is 5 and my youngest will be 11 months at the time of the trip. It's a 13 hour drive. We're planning on driving through the night, so the kids will sleep for the most part, but we'll still have around 6 hours to go by the time they'll wake up. My oldest will be good with toys and the portable dvd player, but what are some tips to keep my youngest occupied? Also, should we plan on more stops for me to get out to stretch my legs? I have a horrible tendency to swell terribly while pregnant and I'm worried about that since we'll be in the van for so long.

hi,
first of all it is a really long journey that you are choosing to be at. I would suggest you go by plane because with kids it can get a little too difficult and dangerous at the same time. However, if you still want to stick with driving yourself through the entire distance, you can do that, too. You can store a lot of food for the go, and some energy drinks and a couple of clothes. You can make arrangements of staying at some points during your journey. For your little kiddo, take in with you some coloring books, and toys. Try to make him sleep most of the duration of the journey. Dont forget the diapers, and, milk bottles.

Wow! Sounds like it'll be a fun trip for your family. We have family out of state, about 9 hours away and will likely make at least 1 trip up. We also drive through the night, we like it better. But since I'm pregnant, well definitely plan a few extra stops for no other reason than me to get out (potty, if need be - likely) and stretch my legs.

We made a trip around 19 weeks to see family when I was pregnant with Baby Boy and I swelled in my legs, feet, and ankles (not really enough stops) and so stayed off them the next day, drinking even more extra water to help flush.

As for activities for the young ones....maybe some little books or toys. I'm not sure how well your youngest does in general. Baby Boy loves the car and (fortunately) has always been a very good rider, usually sleeping most of the time (and we've done 13 or more hours in the car). For your youngest, if your comfortable, you could also do some YouTube song videos or something like that.
