Q: NT Scan & what to expect?

I have the NT scan on Monday (I'll be 12w5d). How soon should I hear about the results? Also, I hear they measure the neck. I'll get those results right away, correct? What does the NT scan entail? Is it a transvaginal ultrasound and what do they do?

It is an abdominal ultrasound. Then, you choose whether you want 1 or 2 sets of blood work. If you wait and get the 2nd blood test, it is a little more accurate - but is still a screening and not a diagnostic test.
During the ultrasound they measure fluid in the baby's neck and check whether the nasal bone is present.
Combined with the blood test results, they give you a ratio or percentage chance. It can show an increased or decreased chance of having a baby with a genetic disorder.
For example, by age, my risk of having a baby with Downs is 1/500. After the ultrasound and blood test, it showed my risk is decreased to 1/1100. This is considered a negative result.
If it goes the other way, like if my chance had increased to 1/100, this would be considered a positive result.
The office I go to will call you within a week if it is a positive result but send a letter if negative.

Mine was also abdominal at 12+3 but was much longer...about an hour. Baby was being a little stubborn though and doing a head stand so I had to get up, walk around and do some jumping jacks to get her to move to a good position for the measurement. They took scans of all her major body parts, blood flow to and from baby, the measurement of the fluid behind the neck and we got to listen to the heartbeat. After that I went to the lab to get my blood drawn. Usually the tech can't tell you anything before the doctor reviews the scans and blood work results but mine hinted that everything looked great. I got all the results at my 14 week doctors appt.

It's an abdominal scan. Mine was maybe 15mins long.
The ultrasound tech told me the neck measurement , but if they don't, they'll also give lab papers to get blood drawn and it lists the neck measurement on there.
They also measure CRL during the scan and check the heartbeat.
My office schedules the scan within a week before your next OB/midwife appointment so they discuss it with you at your next appointment. They all have different procedures though.
There's two sets of blood draws, first is done the day you have the scan, the second is done around 16w usually
