Q: frustrated: alternative glucose testing and weight gain

I researched alternatives to avoid the GTT. One option was to track by finger prick at fasting and two hours after meals for a week. I reported back my numbers at my appointment last night. All were within the acceptable range. So I am thinking i'm in the clear...then...I get a call after the appointment saying that while the dr I saw and the dr I discussed this option with agree that these numbers are acceptable, there are some others in the practice who may not accept them due to my weight gain (so far 36lbs, I'm at 30 weeks) and may still want me to have the GTT. It's frustrating that I went to the effort to find an alternative, that the office approved, and now am being told all my efforts might be for nothing and I might have to do the GTT anyway. I also find it frustrating that there is the possibility that they may completely discount my data, based solely on weight gain. Everyone gains weight differently during pregnancy. Anyone have any thoughts or similar experience?

It is not even protocol for midwives in Ontario to check weight during a pregnancy. I'm creeping up to 30 lbs and 25 weeks and no one has ever been concerned with that nor have they with my first two. Although any woman can develop gestational diabetes, ur risk factors are lower if u 1. Dont have a history with diabetes 2. You weren't overweight before ur pregnancy and 3. If ur white.
Can u not ask to skip it because of your diligence with the finger pricks? You should have that choice.

It's not the drink so much that I have an issue with, it's needles...and the thought of having to be in the lab for an hour, which for me is the most terrifying place on earth, especially knowing at the end of that hours there's a needle heading my way.

Is there a particular reason you don't want to drink the orange sugary liquid? I never heard of the alternative until I read your question. Just curious.

Nope, not diabetic and all of my week-long finger prick numbers were within the range they are supposed to be. I realize I have a few weeks to go and could gain more, but it's very frustrating to me that the numbers I provided might not be good enough, just because of my "weight gain". Grrrrrr~!

I don't understand because I gained 36 lbs my last pregnancy and they didn't blink an eye at that. I did have the glucose test and past it with flying colors... are you diabetic to start with?
