I take 3mg throughout pregnancy...never had an issue. The NIH did a study on 5mg+ doses of FA in early pregnancy and found that "high doses of supplementary folic acid in early pregnancy may be associated with enhanced vocabulary development, communicational skills and verbal comprehension at 18 months of age." It's not really a vitamin u can OD on, its water soluble so u pee out the excess...that being said, they never really tested over 5mg and it can mask a B-12 deficiency.
Better to have and not need than to need and not have. I say take 1mg or more...consider B-12 as well.

My prenatal also has 800 mcg but I also take an additional pill for more folic acid due to twins. My RE and OB said for one, the prenatal with 800 would have been just fine.

I would definitley ask your doc, but while I was on pregnant I took my usual prenatal(Vitafusion Prenatal Gummy 800 mcg) and folic acid supplement that was 400mcg. I discussed this with my doc she said that it was fine, but she said that to much can cause problems.
