Q: softened cervix?

I am 35 weeks today and I slipped and fell this morning and was having contractions so I went to Labor and Delivery to be monitored. after about 3 hours, my contractions stopped and they sent me home. While i was there, they checked my cervix and they told me that I haven't started dilating, but they told me that my cervix is soft and not as thick. What does this mean? How soon after this am i likely to go into labor? My OB said they will not try and stop my labor (if he chooses to come anytime soon), because after my last two scans, our little man is already measuring full term. What are your experiences with this?

Dilation and effacement (softening/thinning of the cervix) are the two things you need to achieve to be able to push a baby out. What you're showing is that your body is gearing up for labor. There's no way of using that progress to say how much longer it'll be before you're in active labor. It could happen in a couple weeks or could be a month or more still, especially if this is your first. While it can't give you a timeline, it does give you the good news that your body is getting ready.
