I made one for our son's room, more for the cuteness factor and the fun personalization of it (his aunt crocheted tiny hippos, and I strung them on a hoop with ribbon), but he's honestly never even noticed it. He'll be moving into a bed and baby will get his crib, so she'll get th mobile by default, but I don't think buying one is necessary.

My oldest only had one because it came with the pack n play I had gotten. It was stationary and didn't do anything. I ended up cutting the Pooh plushies off of it and gave them to him to play with. With my youngest, a bedding set we got came with one. It wound up and played music. He seemed to like it, but would always pull it down, so we ended up buying him one of the music makers that attach to the side of the crib. It lights up, has movement, and, of course, plays soothing music. He loves it, and now that he's old enough, if he wakes up during the night, he turns it on to lull himself back to sleep. We will be getting another one of those for this one and foregoing the mobile.

I don't think I will be buying one. I feel like its a waste of money. I do plan on making a small one just because I have extra fabric from the blanket I made but I don't see the point of one.
