Q: Glucola Test & Fasting

So, my midwife has me scheduled for a 3 hour Glucola test tomorrow morning, ahead of the typical 20 week time frame when these tests are typically done due to my history with pre-diabetes, even though my A1C is 5.4.

My question is, I was told to fast for 8-9 hours before the blood gets drawn (3 times in a 3 hour time frame). Is it okay for me to have water up until the test? I am extremely thirsty and need to stay drinking otherwise I will end up dehydrated.

I think after reading some of the comments that the reason I didn't have to fast was because I have only ever been for the 1 hour test. For the 1 hour test you can't eat or drink only while you are waiting between the drink and the blood test. However, I could have whatever I wanted beforehand. I haven't had the pleasure of sitting through the 3 hour test. That just doesn't sound like fun at all. lol.

My doctor's office tells patients that they are still allowed to have water for the 3hr test. Just no food or other drinks after midnight the night before.

I always have to fast for mine but i was told water is fine.

I was allowed to eat and drink normally for the 1 hour tests and I was allowed to drink water during the test. However for the 3 hour test I had to fast overnight. The different versions of the test have different requirements. I believe for the 3 hour I was only allowed to take morning meds with an ounce of water.

I could have swore my instructions said nothing to eat or drink even water before the test (I think it was 10-12 hrs before). I will check my paperwork and see what the instructions were. They were very specific as it was about a page long!

Water is fine as long as your doing sips of water at a time. During my test I was allowed a cup of water between draws to stay hydrated and to prevent myself from throwing up. Good luck.

I would think water would be fine as it has nothing in it, especially sugar. I wonder why you have to fast, I didn't for mine. As always, it's probably best to ask your doctor.
