Q: Spotting & Low Hcg? Should I stop hoping?

I'm 5w+2 days past my lmp. I have had positive hpts all week. Thursday I had a bad anxiety attack. Friday morning I woke up to pink spotting. I went to my primary physician and she did another urine test (came back positive immediately). She said if I bled anymore to go to the ER. Later, the same day, I noticed I was spotting a tiny bit heavier with a brown color. I called the primary physician back and she sent me to the ER. The ER staff said they couldn't see anything on ultrasound yet (due to how early it is) & my hcg was only at 51.6, but the urine test said positive and my cervix is closed. This morning I am spotting brown and a little heavier than last night. I don't know what to think! There hasn't been any pain or cramping, just the bleeding. I am so afraid to get my hopes up about this pregnancy for fear of another miscarriage. Does anybody have any advice?

Answer from Gemma (submitted on Facebook) "I spotted pink n brown at 5 weeks 4 days had a scan and try found a heartbeat . At 12 weeks I had heavy bleeding but no cramps cervix was closes levels still high . The baby had died around 8 or 9 weeks but my levels stayed high for ages due to a partial molar . My sister had really heavy bleeding with pain an clots and her baby is 20 ;)
Point being it can go either way and everyone's symptoms and experiences are different . Just try and rest and go straight in with any bleeding ( ya don't have to have cramps)"

Answer from Hilary (submitted on Facebook) "Brown usually means old blood which in this case is good but still very scary. Take the weekend to rest put your feet up and pray. I know easier said then done but try not to stress and the absence of cramps is also I good sign as is your cervix being closed. If you start cramping or bleeding gets heavy or bright red I would go to ER prayers and hugs"

Answer from Vicki (submitted on Facebook) "I bled from around 6 weeks to 17 weeks - not much, just spotting. They scanned me everytime and couldn't explain the bleeding. I now have a healthy one year old... hopefully it will be fine. As someone previously said, old blood is dark and is better in this case. If it's bright red then you should definitely seek help asap"

Answer from Moni (submitted on Facebook) "I also bled quite a bit throughout my first trimester, starting as early as 5 weeks, also. I didn't experience cramping or pain either. Just blood, sometimes bright red, sometimes brown. My hcg levels were oddly high one day, not high a few days later. They thought it MIGHT have been a cyst on my ovary causing it. Brown usually does mean old blood. I remember the panic you're experiencing well, as I'd had a stillbirth several months before. Easier said than done, but try to relax and stay calm. The doctor can't do too much at this point, but go as often as you need to feel comfortable and reassure yourself that your cervix is still closed. Lay down with your feet elevated when possible. My baby is now 5 mos., proof that sometimes the anxiety is just that. I wish you luck."

Try not to worry too much. Bleeding in early pregnancy is surprisingly common, especially brown (ie. old) blood. There's many reasons for it, often it's just your little bug digging in further. Try not to worry too much just yet.

I spotted and out right bled from 5 weeks to 13 weeks. I gave birth to a health baby girl 6 weeks ago. :) Spotting and bleeding in early pregnancy can be normal. The only real way to tell is to get your hcg level taken again to make sure it is doubling. I know it is near impossible not to worry but try not to stress. :)

I bleed/spotted from around 12 weeks to around 15 weeks. One morning I even had clots. I'm currently almost 35 weeks and so far, so good. I think bleeding/spotting in pregnancy is much more common than we think. I wouldn't worry so much about the spotting. I would get your HCG checked again though if it will put your mind at ease. The first number doesn't really mean much I don't think. You want to second number to have doubled though.

Answer from Gina (submitted on Facebook) "It's very common. As long as the bleeding isn't soaking a pad and there is no cramping or clots then get some rest."
