Q: Wisdom tooth keeping me up at night... help!

I'm 4w6d today and I was unable to sleep at all last night due to persistent burning pain in my jaw. After over 4 hours of trying and failing to fall asleep, I got up and looked in my mouth at the bathroom mirror. The center of the tooth has rotted out completely (it was partially impacted for the first 1-2 years after eruption) and the root/gum is exposed and irritated, so I think it might be infected. There's a radiating burning discomfort throughout the whole left side of my jaw.

After some research, I found that anesthesia is typically NOT recommended in the first trimester. Do I just have to try to wait until the second trimester to have this tooth extracted? I have a consultation with an oral surgeon on Friday and I'll definitely make sure he knows about my pregnancy up front.

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!

Typically, they won't extract a tooth if it's got a raging infection. Most likely the oral surgeon will but you on antibiotics to clear up the infection and then schedule the extraction. Depending on the root system of the wisdom tooth, you may not need extensive anesthesia; it's possible it could be done with just a local. But that will be up to you and your dentist.
