Q: High blood pressure during pregnancy?

I've always had pretty high blood pressure and now that I am pregnant my doctors are concerned and have labeled me a high risk pregnancy. I am 24 weeks and I started a blood pressure medication but it gave me a bad reaction. It hasnt been too high since I stopped so my doctor wants to wait and see what happens before we try something else. My biggest fear is a stillbirth or the baby dying before it is delivered as I have been told it is a big risk at the end of pregnancy. Should I ask to be induced early just in case or is there anything else I can do? I am a first time mom and am so nervous, I just want everything to go smoothly. Thanks mommas!

Goodevening everyone,
I can totally relate with your pain, it is unbelievably painful and unfortunate. Your doctor will monitor it at each appt and will determine any needed interventions such as induction. My blood pressure rose in my last month but not enough to make my babies come early. Oddly I actually developed high blood pressure complications after birth but they resolved within days. You should drink more water, and consume less salt to monitor your blood pressure changes within the defined limits.

Feeling your pain! I am 18 weeks and have had high blood pressure since my mid 20's (I'm almost 39 now). I was switched to Methyldopa and do have a good cuff blood pressure machine at home. I used to suffer from migraines and now when my blood pressure raises quite a bit, I get a "mini migraine" They gave me Fioricet for that but I try not to take it.
I wish I could answer your questions about being induced, etc. But I am a first time mom too. I can tell you what works for me to get my blood pressure down. Basically bringing my body temperature down: bare feet on cool tile floor, not over exerting myself, lots and lots and lots of water, cool baths instead of feel good hot baths.... one really big thing too to keep my bp down is keeping the bowels moving- tmi? - I have taken to having Raisin Bran every morning! Good luck and best wishes.

I suffered from high blood pressure before pregnancy but it naturally lowered during pregnancy until the last month. Because I was carrying 2 and had a higher risk of high blood pressure, I borrowed a little blood pressure machine from my mom and would take it at least once a week. It gave me peace of mind and helped me monitor any changes. Your doctor will monitor it at each appt and will determine any needed interventions such as induction. My blood pressure rose in my last month but not enough to make my babies come early. Oddly I actually developed high blood pressure complications after birth but they resolved within days.
