Q: Starting Solids

Colton turned 4 months this past Saturday. At his ~4 month appointment the Doctor said we could start cereal if he can sit up with some support and if he starts waking up earlier in the night due to being hungry. He's been waking up earlier due to being hungry and in the evening, before bed, I feel like he just want to wait constantly. I think we are going to try the Gerber oatmeal cereal tonight mixed with formula. I've read that they basically both are the greatest but that rice cereal has virtually no benefits. Anyways, any tips on our first experience? I'm so nervous I'm going to choke him or something.

4 Months is average for solids. I started by adding a little to her milk (breast or formula) a made it a little soupy. she had fun with it. Get your video camera out - the faces and reactions are so cute.

I live by the "try 5 times" rule. since a baby's taste buds and are still learning - having a baby try something 5 times gives the biggest chance they will like it. I also started with vege's first - My pediatrician (and a few other people) advised me that starting out with sweet fruits makes the change to veges harder. Starting out with veges means they can grow to like them . And trying 1 food at a time for a few days also.

I know not everyone will agree with me but these are just the way I did things. My 6y/o will eat anything now. LOL

Our pediatrician had us start Valerie on solids at 4 months. She showed all the signs of being ready. (Watching us eat, reaching for the utensils, trying to get our food, sitting up to get closer, smacking her lips together, etc.) I use rice cereal and mix in baby food with it. She loves bananas and sweet potatoes.

My pediatrician gave us the 'go ahead' for our daughter around 4 months too and said we could start her on cereal mixed with formula but I ended up waiting another month because she really didn't seem interested and seemed satisfied with her bottle. I know my sister started my nephew on small amounts of cereal (I think she just gave him them at supper to start) at 4 months because he just never seemed satisfied with the bottle and always was curious about what they were eating etc. As long as you thin the cereal out with the formula, you should be fine. It will take him some time getting used to the taste/texture but I bet he will love it! Good luck!

In case you see this, I did comment on the forum but we are getting ready to start it with Oliver. Most baby foods like rice cereal say that are for 4-6 months anyway.

Awww solids already...he's growing fast!
I always started my monkeys on rice cereal. It does have next to no benefit, but is easier to get them used to the habit and texture. Texture is HUGE with babies. Once it's tolerated, u can add a small amount of a fruit puree to it (same with oatmeal). Pick up a few diff brands of whichever cereal ur starting him on, they don't all taste the same, and babies are picky. My kids would only eat Heinz, and u wouldn't think so, but there is a difference in taste between Heinz and Gerber. Barley was another hit with DD...it's actually really good.
Don't worry about choking him, keep it thin and give small bites. He'll do fine and so will u! =))
