Q: Group B Strep & penicillin allergy?

So I found today that I tested positive for the Group B Strep bacteria and my doctor told me they'd usually do an IV of penicillin during labor but I'm allergic to penicillin. Just curious if anyone else has ever been in that situation. Did the doctor recommend a different kind of antibiotic for your labor or was there some other route taken?

I had this same issue except I ended up testing negative. However, the dr told me before the test that since I have an allergy to their drug of choice, and since these things tend to be resistant to certain antibiotics, it was standard protocol that my swab would be more thoroughly cultured, I.E. to not only check for the presence of strep B but ALSO determine what STRAIN, all at once, rather than just the simple yes/no test. That way in the event that I am positive, they could quickly identify a safe alternate to penicillin that would work for MY specific strain. I think it ended up costing a bit more in lab fees than someone who isn't allergic, but I'm glad they were so thorough from the get go.

As far as I know, an antibiotic is necessary if you test positive (which I did as well with my first). I'm sure there is an alternate to penicillin that they'll give you :)
