Category: Is It Safe?

Asked by jtwsfjtwsf

Q: I drank before I missed my period / knew I was pregnant. How bad is it really?

Earlier today, I found out that I'm pregnant (currently 4 weeks and 3 days). I had been drinking approximately 2-4 drinks per day up until a few days ago. I know that total abstinence is recommended, and I've now stopped, but how bad really could this have been? I've heard conflicting info. Sounds as though it might be ok since the placenta hasn't developed yet? This is my first pregnancy, so I've nervous!

Hi dear,
From a time we can't seem to remember, we have been told about the quitting of any sorts of drug or abuses during pregnancy. And it canbe horrific if you do it anyway. The new findings is it is unsafe at any time. This is because of the undeveloped liver and the baby cannot metabolize the alcohol. What's done is done,as long as you have stopped. Things should be ok. But this is why my hubby and I were careful and did not drink once we were ttc or if we thought we were not "safe" enough. Try not to stress about it now. And make sure you are not on any drinks or smoke for the remainder of the time left in your pregnancy. Once the placenta has veen formed, the side effects are really duffucukt to talkabout, because they can get as much terrible as you can imagine. These beliefs were rather really true, and still accrptable due valid reasons and one must not joke around with them after they are aware of their pregnancy. The risk is too much to recover from, otherwise.

Honey, with my first I found out when I was around 4.5 weeks along and I was a heavy drinker AND cigarette smoker (I quit both the day I found out of course!) and my 2.5 year old is smart as a whip and growing perfectly. Just make changes and you'll be just fine.

I wouldn't worry too much. Many women don't find out until they're 6+ weeks. Congrats :)

When I found out I was pregnant I was already 5 weeks and 2 days. I had just gotten a new tattoo about 2 weeks before I found out and I was drinking, shot, mixed drinks everything when hanging out. Obviously I stopped and the doctor told me that as long as I stopped drinking and the person who did my tattoo is clean than I will be fine.

I will be 28 weeks on Wednesday and so far so good. Try not to stress it.

I had several glasses of wine the weekend before I found out I was pregnant. I think it happens to a lot of us. My babies are 10 months and are completely fine!

I know how you feel, as I too enjoy a drink :). The new findings is it is unsafe at any time. This is because of the undeveloped liver and the baby cannot metabolize the alcohol. What's done is done,as long as you have stopped. Things should be ok. But this is why my hubby and I were careful and did not drink once we were ttc or if we thought we were not "safe" enough, lol. Try not to stress about it now. With my first I had no idea I was or could be pregnant (a bit naive at the time and hubby, bf at the time, said pulling out was safe) I was around 8 weeks when we found out. My second I probably drank till I got a + but I don't remember. GL to ya and congrats!
