Q: MRSA

My step-daughter has just been diagnosed with an active MRSA infection. She doesn't live with us, but she does visit quite frequently. Does anybody know what I need to do to avoid an infection myself? Is it as simple as washing my hands after I hug her or do I need to avoid her altogether (which is really a terrible thing to do to the poor girl for the next 8+ months)? If I do get an infection, what are the risks to me and my baby? Thanks for any advice!

Seek medical advice about this one. You are vulnerable in pregnancy because your immune system is compromised. My friend had MRSA following her c-section and nearly lost a finger (no idea how it got there - surely it should have been in the surgical wound?!). In the end, they didn't amputate. They managed to patch her together and her body finally fought it. You can't tell now - the scarring isn't too obvious. Her finger looks like a finger. She was scared for her life and vulnerable from surgery and a horrible 3 day labour.
