Q: Trisomy 18 1/70 chance.

I got a literal wake up call yesterday from my doctor telling me that I have a 1 in 70 chance that my baby has Edwards syndrome. She said that there is more then a 98% chance that everything is fine but I am still freaking out. I rushed 2 hours away to get to the office to do more blood testing just for them to tell me they won't know anything for another week or two.. They offered to let me do the amnio testing but that sounds terrifying when it comes with the chance of miscarriage. Has any one else had this happen and their babies turn out to be healthy? How did you chose to handle it? Did you do the amniotic testing? I just need some advice because at this point I'm starting to lose hope of ever having a child. I am so scared.

I am sorry to hear that you are struggling with this. I can't help from personal experience. However, do tell yourself - like the doctor said -that there is 98.6% chance that all is well. If there were 70 women in a room, only one of you would have a child with Edwards Syndrome. Like you, I am not sure if I would do the amniotic testing due to the 0.5-1% chance of miscarriage, but the need to know what I was dealing with would be strong. Is there an option to have a further anomaly scan or to take blood from the placenta? These options are safer for your baby. Not sure what blood test you had. Will that give a clearer picture or be a definitive answer? Thinking of you.

Yes I did, it took a week though and it was torture. Everything looked good and we found out we're having a little boy. I hope all goes well with your testing, just relax and try not to worry about it.

Hi! Have you gotten any results back yet? I am getting my genetic testing done within the next couple weeks. I am 9 weeks today. I am nervous but I do know that I would not want the amnio test because of the chance of miscarriage, plus I had one when I was 36 weeks pregnant with my daughter and it was the worst pain I have ever been through. Thoughts and prayers are with you and I hope you get good results.
