36 Week Update

There has been so much happening in the last several weeks. Here is the newest on everything:

Yesterday (36w0d) was my ultrasound to confirm that Madilynn was indeed breach. The ultrasound confirmed it. It also showed that she is currently 6lbs 6oz and in the 59th percentile. She is a happy healthy baby! What more could a mom ask for?!?!

Today (36w1d) was my doctor’s appointment for the weekly exam and NST. The NST went as expected. She was a little squirmy which made it take a little longer than necessary but all came out well. After that, I had the appointment. Because she is breach, the doctor decided that we need to make a decision on what we want to do. The options were C-section or the manual maneuver (Eternal Cephalic Version Procedure) to attempt to flip her. The doctor was very informative on the procedure. She advised that they will use ultrasound to determine the best way to flip her. They will then start me on an IV of medication to completely relax the uterus muscles. (The side effect of this is a racing heart for mommy… no fun). They will then coat my belly in a gel (although I cannot remember what kind of gel she stated it would be) and use their hands and bodies to manually turn Madilynn. I will have 2 doctors there to assist each other.

Now for the negatives of the External Cephalic Version: There is only a 50% chance that this will be successful. IF it is indeed successful, Madilynn may still be able to flip back. Also, there is a VERY small risk (but any risk is terrifying) that the placenta will rupture. Again, this is a VERY small chance but it will lead to an emergency C-section if it were to happen.

After the procedure, the doctors will keep us there for monitoring for a few hours. How long exactly will all depend on how Madilynn and my bodies react. They advised that the medication that they give me will decrease her heart rate (whilst speeding up mine… weird) but that it is completely normal. They will monitor her for a while after to confirm that she is returning to normal. IF she does not and her heart rate stays low, it will ultimately lead to a C-section.

I know that the threat of C-section has been said several times, but the only way to even POSSIBLY avoid a C-section is to attempt this manual maneuver. With that being said, My hunny and I have decided to proceed with this. It will be Monday morning at 6am at the hospital. It is scary but needed at this point. If it does not work, they will go ahead and schedule a C-section for November 9th (39w0D) as I cannot deliver a breach baby.

On another note, there was no dilatation at the appointment today but the doctor has increased the BP medication that I take. It is still showing me in the low 90’s for the diastolic number and 136-145 for the systolic number. She was not very happy with that. I will take a double dose in the mornings and a single dose at night until next appointment. At that point, (hopefully there will be improvement) if there is not improvement, we will decide the next course of action. Fingers crossed that all goes well and Madilynn arrives safe and healthy… no matter HOW she gets here!

Good luck on the procedure! Hopefully they can get your BP lower. I was on 60 mg of Nifedical XL (nifedipine) for the longest time and it always did the trick of lowering my BP.

Best of luck to you! Must be exciting to have a plan! I do hope she turns though before that whole process!

You're still got plenty of time for baby to flip. My friends baby was breech right up until she went into labour got to the hospital for her csection and delivered viginally as baby flipped during labour. At only 36w you've still got a good Chance she'll flip. Always good to have a plan though. Best of luck. X

Hi, my baby boy has been breech for the last month, im due a month after you (12th Dec) and Monday night I felt him turn, yesterday I had a ultrasound which confirmed he had turned, I did as much as I could to help turn him. I did the all 4's thing, getting hubby to talk to him 'down there', there is an accupressure procedure where they use a moxibustion stick to effect the hormones which apparently has a good success rate, although some babies just wont turn. I did TONNES of research as soon as I learnt my baby was breech, there's lots of good videos on youtube for the ECV and the moxibustion. I hope baby turns for you x
