5 Weeks 4 Days old!

It has been so hard for me to log on here. My apartment is taken over by baby gear and Allison's toys, that it's just too much work and not enough space to pull my laptop out as often as I would like to!

Madelyn weighed 8lbs 8oz and was 23 inches long at her 1 month checkup last Friday! At least she's gaining, although it's somewhat slow, her pediatrician hasn't expressed any concern about weight just yet. I can't help but compare her to Allison, so I checked all of Allison's care summaries online and noticed that Allison was well over 9lbs at her 1 month checkup, and she weighed 7lbs even a birth. Maybe Madelyn will just be tall and thin like my husband, lol.

The last few weeks have been somewhat rough for us! The Zantac only worked for a few days before it stopped working, so we had to start all over! We switched Madelyn to Prevacid and she's been on it for nearly a week and I've already noticed a HUGE improvement! She still spits up, but it's not as often and most importantly, she doesn't scream in pain after nursing/when burping and spitting up! So glad that she's not in pain anymore, since that was my main concern. But, although the reflux seems to not be bothering her, we're dealing with gas issues now! She's always been gassy, but was able to pass it without too many issues once we started the probiotic. Her gas is worse at night now, nothing seems to help. No amount of gas drops, bicycling her legs, bouncing, rocking, nursing, diaper changing, etc. seems to help her. She will cry off and on for about 2 hours or so. Eventually I cave and give her gripe water and it calms her down within minutes, and it's enough for her to nurse (and actually drink instead of pulling off every few minutes crying and kicking her legs), then she gets swaddled and goes right to sleep. Now I've thought that it *may* be colic, since she's only this fussy at night (she fusses during the day sometimes, but not very long and a couple farts usually follow and she's fine afterward). But the thing that confuses me, is it's not always EVERY night, although it's been most nights this week. And it's not at a specific time. Sometimes she fusses around 7pm, another night she'll fuss around 10pm. Some nights, gripe water is the only thing to help, other nights, I don't have to give it to her. It's really amazing how different her and Allison are at this stage! Really hope to get it figured out soon. I hate when she's crying and I've exhausted all my options and nothing helps her.

I've uploaded a few pictures in my gallery from Madelyn's newborn photo session that my friend Jessica took (same girl who took my pregnancy announcement pictures of Allison!). The one attached to this journal entry is probably my absolute favorite of her!

I know I've said this before, but hopefully I mean it this time when I say that I will try to log on more, lol! :)

Thanks pbc! I completely forgot about the "purple crying"! My hospital plays a 5 minute video on it before they allow you to leave the hospital, lol! It definitely makes sense, now that I think about it. She's been better the past 2 nights, luckily! And I'm so glad the reflux issues seem to be better now, she's a much happier baby! :) She's starting to smile back if you smile at her, so I'm thinking they're social smiles now more than gas smiles, lol.

It's hard not to compare when you have 2 babies. I always worry about my daughter being so much smaller than her brother but the doctor always tells me she is growing at her pace. I have to remember too that her genetics make her predisposed to being smaller framed. Glad to hear the reflux issues are getting worked out. We had horrible gas issues with the twins. Look up something called "purple crying." I had a very fussy one and it wasn't colic. I really think her tummy issues made her irritable but she definitely got over it by 4 months!
