Caroline is Five Months Old!

A bit early, it isn't official until Monday but I'm using my mom's internet. Wow, five months old… Only one painfully short month until we celebrate sweet Caroline’s half-birthday. *Sniffle* I can’t lie, it has been the most amazing five months of my life. I went through a lot of emotions while I was pregnant, worrying if we had made the right choice and hoping I could love her as much as I love Sebastian, but I needn’t have wasted the energy. Baby girl has proven to be the perfect last piece to our puzzle and we are all so crazy about her and her about us. I couldn’t have asked for two easier, loving babies (even if one is trudging through the back talking phase right now…) and my heart is so full. Unfortunately, my husband didn’t get the new job he applied for so it’s a good thing we had already prepared ourselves for the worst, though I’m gently trying to nurse the hurt out of DeWayne’s spirit. Speaking of nursing, we are still going strong! I have literally took it one feeding at a time and am pleasantly surprised by how far we have been able to go. Despite our pediatrician giving us the go-ahead, we have decided to wait another month before we start with food not produced by my body. We’re planning on starting with powdered cereal mixed with water (since I won’t have to worry about water intoxication as much) and then move on to baby food a few weeks later. I’d like to find a Bullet and make my own from the different vegetables in my garden. I’ll also start giving her her breast milk more and more frequently in bottles so she can get used to drinking from a cup. We’ll stick to nursing in the evening though and any time she needs comforting. By the time she’s a year, if all goes as planned, she should be sleeping through the night in her own room (she’ll be with us until at least nine months) and phasing out nighttime feedings until she runs out of the stored stuff and I let my supply dry up. I’ll miss it but I never thought I was the girl who could nurse a baby who could walk. I admire women who do it for years but it’s just not me. But, back to our doctor, my favorite thing about our pediatrician is how she asks me every visit what I like most about every phase. There’s very little that doesn’t thrill me about this little girl- except maybe her new reluctance to sleep through the night (which is why her doctor suggested introducing food but I’m not doing it for my convenience). My girl has the most infectious smile, she’s so very patient, and I’ve only heard her legitimately cry less than a handful of times so far (I don’t count needles at the doctor since it doesn’t last long) and she’s not very good at faking it either (it comes out sounding indignant and makes her sound more like she’s griping at you rather than getting upset). Seeing how much Caroline and her brother love each other does wondrous things for my soul too. He has never shown a moment of jealousy and she watches his every move, which is why we’re cracking down on naughty behavior. We are indeed the luckiest little family. Even if our finances don’t make it a luxurious life, it’s a damn good one.

P.S. I included a picture of my little family on the beach earlier this month during our first vacation all together.

It really is special to watch the sibling bond grow. It's one of my favorite things to see with my kiddos and with their older brothers and sisters. Glad to hear how well things are continuing to go!
