Mine is next week, I will be 10weeks. The reason I am getting one is because I'm high risk, due to high blood pressure and history of gestational diabetes. Otherwise my doctor told me I wouldn't have one until around 20weeks. You have to check with our insurance company too they may only cover 1 unless you have a high risk pregnancy. Good luck and Congrats. :)

I had my first scan at 6 weeks to verify a viable pregnancy and then my doctor saw me every two weeks for scans for the 1st trimester.

In the UK it's always 12 weeks unless you're at risk of miscarriage, because before 10 weeks they can't accurately date a pregnancy.

I had my first at 7 weeks, BUT part of the reason was because I had long irregular cycles so they needed to determine how far along I was (based on LMP, they thought I was almost 9 weeks...but I knew when I ovulated so I knew it would be changed). Also, I'm high risk due to high blood pressure and I had the potential of having an incompetent cervix (due to a surgery I had many years ago).

So, had it not been for those factors, I may not have had my first scan until closer to 12 weeks. It really depends on the circumstances. Up until 21 weeks, I was getting u/s every 2-3 weeks (mostly to check the cervix). Of course, I didn't mind having extra ultrasounds:-) In fact, I'm 27 weeks now and this has been the longest time frame of my pregnancy that I've gone without an u/s:-( But I have another one at 29 weeks:-) Can't wait to see how much she's grown!

With my 1st pregnancy I didn't get an u/s, but with my son I got one around 7/8 weeks and then I had one this time at 5 weeks 6 days. But I need to add in that I m/c with my 1st pregnancy so I think my doc just likes to look early to make sure everything's growing right.
I didn't get a 12 week scan nor was it offered, and won't have another u/s till my anatomy scan next week at 22 weeks(it's usually 20 weeks depending on how soon they can get you in)

I had one at 6w2d, but that was only because I was spotting, and had sharp pains on my right side. I had asked the Dr's about having a 12w scan done and they said no, that usually you only get one ultrasound at around 20 weeks (which I thought was BS, but anyways!). They claim the only reason why some women get one around here at 12 weeks is for dating purposes, if they did not know when their LMP was.

Some women's doctors do an early ultrasound at their first appt and some don't; it's really a mix. Your doc should offer you a screening at 12 weeks and that would include an ultrasound (and blood work); it is a check for fetal abnormalities though. I do know there are some doctors that don't do this and some insurances that don't cover it though so you'll have to check. The next scan would be the 20 week scan for anatomy (and gender if you want it); I think most docs do that. If you really want a scan before then you can ask for a referral for one but you may want to call your insurance to make sure it is covered or find out how much it will cost you. There are some places that do them for fun and early gender checking and they will charge anywhere from 50-a few hundred bucks out of pocket. You'd probably have to wait til you are around 14 weeks or so for those, some places might do it earlier on request though, I don't know.

If this is just your visit with the OB nurse and not the doctor then it will take a while and all that happens today is they ask you a boatload of questions and give you some information on what to expect. At your visit in a couple weeks with the OB they will probably try and listen for the heartbeat and maybe do a scan then for dating purposes. Some women never get more than their 20 week anatomy scan though.
