Q: 11 weeks pregnant and I am starting a new job in a couple of days, can anyone ease my worries????

I have been trying to get a new job since I lost my job back in June 2012. After months of applications and such I have finally gotten a job at Hancock bank which is pretty hard to get into so I have heard. I have yet to tell them that I am pregnant seeing as orientation is Mon. Jan. 14th 2013. I will be working part time and Mississippi does not have a maternity law, only a FMAL act. In order to qualify for this act you have to work for the company for 12 months.....I am due July 24th....my insensitive brother-in-law just basically said go back to work the week after you have the baby and toss the kid into daycare. Working part time with daycare being like 400 a month means I will basically just be working to pay daycare and I do not want to ship my one week old off with strangers!!!! I also do not want to stand there in pain after pushing out a watermelon!!!

This is our first baby, am I just being selfish or what do you guys think I should do?

To be honest I would rather wait until my baby is able to at least sit up on their own or walk, my hubby can handle things if we are tight with money, so my job would be very helpful. He would also rather me not work for the first year of our baby's life, but like I said the money would help.

I plan on telling them ASAP when I start on Monday, no point in beating around the bush. They have to be told before week 15 so I might as well get it done and over with lol

All daycares are required by law to not accept a infant until they have reached 6 weeks of age. So you will not be able to go from straight having the baby to work again. As for the organization I would be upfront with your bosses regarding your pregnancy. Let them know you are really wanting to work for the company. They can even choose to keep you on as an employee or not. However, it is against the law to fire an individual because they are pregnant. I think the real question is do you want to return to work and having a baby? are you prepared to put your child in daycare and return to work? Finally, do you really need this job to provide for your baby or are you just looking for a job because you want to work?

You should definitely embrace that time! I'd say just save like crazy for that time and hope your job is reasonable! Good Luck!!!

Thank you Stephpan, I have been doing a lot of reading and what you say is true. 6-12 weeks is the minimum most people need for vaginal, which I am having, especially for first time births and it is 8-16 weeks for c-section depending on complications. It does not really say much about possible vaginal ripping which can be possible. I also read that 6 weeks is the youngest they will take.....this sucks so much, I want time to heal and be with my baby as a first time new mommy! ):

You actually may not be able to go back to work that quickly - whether you want to our not. The doctor probably won't clear you for work before 6 weeks post-partum, 8 weeks if you have a C-Section. Also - most day cares will not accept an infant that young. I'd bring the issue up with your boss as soon as you feel comfortable and ask about the possibility of alternate leave. It really isn't fair!
