Q: Fetal Doppler

I'm thinking about getting one when I get into the second trimester, which brand did you like? Or if you know someone who liked a certain brand.. I want to get a good one, but I don't know what to look for in one. Thanks! :)

I didn't think they were dangerous either, I guess I'll have to ask my doctor if he thinks it would be okay. I have my ultrasound tomorrow so I'm excited about that. :)

Midwives and doctors use dopplers so they cant be that dangerous really.

I bought a doppler and it was the best thing i ever bought its was around £30 off ebay its approved. It will take a few attempts to find the heart beat but not i gog my daughters right near the pubic bone in the middle from 10 weeks untill around 16 weeks but by then you will no what your looking for and if you get 1 with a screen on so you can see the heart rate then you will know for sure as babies hearts are alot faster than adults and they sound like galloping horses or a train. Xx

It's so crazy loud in utero, I doubt baby would notice a train! My OB said to baby it's like someone is running a super powerful vacuum cleaner right next to their face 24/7. She says that's why running the vacuum cleaner or making loud SHUSHing noises right next to their ears settles newborns down.

It's crazy the differences in information that people get from different sources. For example, my OB says it's fine to take a hot bath or go in the hot tub, just as long as you don't raise your core temperature over 101.

Anyway, choose a source YOU trust and go with that.

Well, estone that's the point Kelliers is making. Anything (like caffeine or home dopplers) used in excess can cause unnecessary harm. Caffeine -over the recommended amount- can cause miscarriage and infertility. Just like using dopplers too frequently, can cause unnecessary exposure to stress, uncomfortable sound waves, and high amounts of heat to the baby.

However, given that, IF one were to choose to use a Doppler at home, they should use it in moderation. And that is what we were both saying. Just like you point out, with caffeine.

Occasional use is okay indeed, but I do not agree with everyday use just to make yourself feel better. That is not necessary. If you are not bleeding, are not high risk, and have no complications, there is not a need to expose the baby to it for the stress factor on the baby alone. How would you like a train to come through your bedroom everyday? By the way, that is not opinion, or internet reading, it is a fact.

If caffeine can cause miscarriage, then why do all the books and Internet research and doctors tell you that you can have up to 200 mg a day? Studies have shown that in pregnancies where women drank excessive amounts of cafffiene, it had an impact on the rate of miscarriage. like I said before, doctors and people have too many different opinions about everything! I think everything in moderation is fine,

mommx is right. The dopplers create more heat than regular ultrasound. You can't take hot baths to protect baby from getting too hot, why expose them to something that will create the same situation? This isn't about "reading something on the internet". It's about knowing facts and then making a decision. For example, it is a fact that caffeine can cause miscarriage. Some women choose to drink a limited amount of coffee anyway and assume the risk and others take in that knowledge and decide the withhold because it's something that is easy to give up and provides reassurance they are doing no harm. Yes, many who drink coffee are fine, but that's really beside the point. The point is you should be educated and determine where your comfort level is at. Please don't look down on some women for consulting with professionals about the risk of a home doppler and deciding, as it's not recommended by any organization whose interests are pregnant women, not to incur any potent

After going through a terrible miscarriage, I bought the sonoline b Doppler for $50 on amazon. It was so reassuring to use when I was pregnant with my son. I used it every other day and he is perfectly healthy. Also, I disagree that it is harmful to the baby. What about the women who go inpatient and have doppler s done daily to make sure their babies re doing ok? So many doctors and midwives have different opinions, not just about this, but everything! i think there are so many stigmas associated with this topic and it is a personal choice. For me, it was great and caused so much less stress. With this second baby, I still use my Doppler every few days.

You just have to do wha you feel works for you and what you are comfortable with.
