Q: Would the fetus still be safe after a failed abortion using Cytotec?

I used 8 Cytotec tablets orally and vaginally to abort on Jan. 10, 2014 but didn't bleed. I had u/s on Jan.13, 2014 and showed still pregnant at 5 weeks and 6 days but fetus has no heartbeat. OB/GYN told me to come back for another ultrasound on Jan. 25, 2014 for fetal viability. If fetus will have heartbeat on the next u/s appointment and pregnancy will be continued, will there be possible defects physically or mentally to the fetus? What are those possible defects?

Hi Bonitta. Just want to ask how are you and the baby today? I have the same situation as you.. I am 5 weeks pregnant now, took 10pills of Cytotec and 4pcs vaginally, but no bleeding at all. Is there any possibility that the baby will be fine and no deformalities after unsuccessful abortion using Cytotec Misoprostol? I want to just go on with my pregnancy now, I regret taking the pills but also I am afraid that the pills can damage my baby's brain or any deformality might happen. Pls help me..

to Eluria88 : Hi, thanks! I appreciate it. Hopefully my baby is fine and he/she will be normal. My OB/GYN advised me to have a congenital scan at 5 months - 6 months to check if there are abnormalities to the baby, hopefully none. My mind says not to keep the baby because all my plans in life will be ruined but my heart says I'm happy and excited to have the baby and he/she will give me a priceless happiness no matter how it would be hard for me. My family wants to keep the baby and they all pray that my baby will be normal, safe and healthy. Please let me know what should I listen to.

I didn't see my baby's heartbeat at 5w4d b but got to see it at 7w4d. I was actually measuring 6w6d so I was off on my conception date and that's likely why it wasn't seen. The fact you haven't had the bleeding and the baby is still in your uterus is a good sign. Abortion is something that needs to really be thought through and I really wish women weren't pressured into it like you were. I cannot even imagine how you're feeling emotionally. I hope your baby is okay, and even if it's not I hope you can try to have one when you are ready for it.
