Q: When is the right time to inform your employer about the pregnancy?

Hi Ladies,

I wanted to find out from you guys when is the right time to ever tell your boss about your pregnancy?

I prefer afternoon appointments with my obgyn, so it would require me to either take half day or simply tell my employer "early" that I need to leave early and the reason.

I also have a problem of a "blubber mouth" for a boss...she might go telling the entire department that I'm expecting...and I'm not ready yet to tell everyone around the office that I'm expecting.

I had to tell my employer right away. I had a job where I was constantly lifting heavy objects, climbing ladders and using cleaning chemicals. Fortunately for me, she was an understanding boss and kept it to herself until I announced it. Good luck!

Most people wait till 12 weeks to be in the safe zone so to speak.
My boss knew as soon as I had that positive pregnancy test (as did everyone else I work with) as we were doing Ivf and work was aware of it as I work in a small workplace and can't easily take time off. I also work with anaesthetic agents that can cause severe birth defects and X-rays so work had to be aware so I could avoid those situations.
In saying this I had 3 miscarriages last year and because I had to tell work early I also had to tell them when I lost the babies but they were very supportive so it's all down to your personal preference

Depends on your situation but for me i had just started a new job when i found out so told my immediate manager right away (was already almost 8 weeks) he was great and because he knew getting time off for Dr appointments was much easier. We didn't tell the higher managers until i was past the 12 week point. For me i found it much easier and less stressful not to have to keep secrets at work, especially when i was struggling with nausea and other symptoms but it really depends on your situation. Good luck!

The right time would be probably after 11-12 weeks of pregnancy....to make sure all is okay and going smoothly.

Its really up to you unless you work in a place that could be hazardous. I had to tell my employer right away because of the chemicals we worked with.

It does come down to an individual preference thing. I'd personally go as long as I could without saying - rather, until it became inconvenient for work to accommodate, but that's just me. Honestly, you should listen to what your gut tells you is right; at least you know you won't be second-guessing yourself that way.
