Q: Experience with an IUD?

At my recent OB visit my favorite (sarcasm) topic of birth control following delivery came up. Estrogen-based pills aren't a great option for me because of my history of migraine with aura, the progesterone-based pills aren't quite as effective, which basically leaves condoms and IUDs. What is everyone's experience with IUDs? Everyone I know has unfortunately had bad experiences, which isn't selling me on that option. We may want another child so can't do anything permanent, we aren't the best always with condoms, and given my long history of miscarriage because of my immune system I need to be very careful NOT to get pregnant when it isn't planned. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I liked my IUD. I got it out because I had too many side effects, but all birth control gives me side effects which is why I'm back on this site lol. It gave me severe ovary pain. Mirena is progestin only also so if you are considering that, you can go for the mini pill instead. I set an alarm so I took it at the same time every day because, to my knowledge, it has to be even more precise on timing then regular pills. It varies though because I know women who loved it and had no problems. The only way to truly know how it will be for you is to try it :)

I had the Mirena for about a year I believe, my periods diminished pretty quickly and I loved that. I just didn't like how invasive it was having to check for the string and it made me paranoid. I don't know if I will do it again but I didn't have anything BAD happen to me from it.

I had Mirena for 2 + years and it was AMAZING!!! I have a usually HEAVY flow for 7 days and it took it down to 5 day medium to light flow. I never had any pain or issues with it either. Everyone is different - I was using the Nuva Ring (for about 5 years) but it stopped working right. Do some research - most methods have side effects and possible problems.

Just wondering if you have tried different strengths of the estrogen based birth control pills. I suffer from migraines as well, and i found that the low dose ones (1/10 instead of 1/20) actually helped my migraines because my hormones didn't fluctuate as much. Also, i was told to skip the inactive pills for that reason. My migraines are somewhat linked to my hormones though, so not sure if that is the case with you.
