The Grandparents Name Debate.
By nicolebub » Posted Feb. 4, 2015 9:59pm - 456 views - 3 comments

So I am in a bit of a pickle.
I had a mini melt down the other day over the fact that my husbands parents want to be called something completely foreign to me in regards to their chosen Grandparents names.

Months ago back when I was about 4 months pregnant I said to my husband that I didn't really like the names they had, which their other grandchild calls them. His mum has May May and his father has Yopi.
Now don't get me wrong, these names are great for their other grandson. I have no opinion on that. He isn't my child. They chose those names over 5 years ago... Good for them!
So back to the beginning as I said, I said to the hubby that I didn't like those names. I'm not into cutsey shit like that. I like good old fashioned solid family names like Grandma & Grandpa, Nanna & Poppa, Nan & Pop, Nanny & Poppy etc etc... you get what I'm saying.

So the other day (after our hubby and I have discussed that neither of us are keen on the names they already have that our nephew calls them), I tell my husband to ask them what they would like to be called by our son when he is born and can talk...... Well what does my MIL say, yep you guessed it, May May. His dad is apparently "googling" better options other than "Yopi". Well.... so now what the fuck do I do? Don't get me wrong, I know its just a name but for goodness sake what the hell is with May May? Can't she just choose a normal fucking Grandparent name? I wouldn't call my son Moonunit or some weird name in the hope that whatever name I chose won't subject him to some kind of picking on or bullying for being so weird or babyish down the track. Seriously its cute for now but can you imagine a boy saying at 12 years of age when he is coming home on the weekend after a skate or surf with friends saying I am going to my May May and Yopi's tonight???? He'll get his head beaten in. (Probably over exaggerating here as I am just not sold on it but you must see what I am trying to say?).

So anyhow, the hubby has just seemed to go with it. Now I am between a rock and a hard place as to ignore their wishes and refer to them as his Grandma & Grandpa, or tell them I hate those names so kindly please choose new ones, or to just shut up and suck it up and start calling my MIL & FIL these silly as fuck names?

What would you do? I know its just a name, and its no big deal but hey its annoying as shit.

Haha.... Passion is a word for it. (Or craziness)
Yeah I am slowly becoming less pissed about the whole situation. In reality I can still refer to them as his grandparents. That will be what my hub calls them if he chooses, not what i have to call them so I guess it really doesn't matter. Just like my mum refers to my hubby as my "husband", she doesn't call him "baby" like I do! Hehe.

I really enjoyed the passion of your writing, lol! That's a personal thing on both sides so I'm not really sure how to weigh in on it, but I do hope you all come to a reasonable agreement:)

Personally, I would just roll with it, but the name debate doesn't really bother me. My mom wants to be called Gigi because grandma sounds old to her. My in-laws are Polish so they are called Buzia (Boosha) and Dzia Dzia (Ja Ja) I had grown up with traditional grandma and grandpa so it was new to me. But, in my opinion it's just something they can control still. Plus, your child can always tell his or her friends about his grandparents rather than May May and Yopi. I hope this helps. Good luck!
