Breech baby - with UPDATE
By Shannybum » Posted Oct. 24, 2011 11:36am - 460 views - 8 comments

I saw my midwife yesterday for my usual check up. It had been delayed as she'd been very busy with four births & follow up visits etc. in the last week. I had a feeling the sharp pains I was having a week or so ago was the baby flipping over - it seems my suspicions were correct.

She went to feel the heartbeat down low on my abdomen and couldn't hear it. She also could not feel the head down there. The baby had been head down at like 28 weeks, so we were suprised. She heard the heartbeat up by my ribs. She is about 95% certain the baby is breech but she can't tell what kind of breech.

So I am waiting to hear from her for an ultrasound time/location (she was sending urgent requests to three in the area) so they can confirm the breech and other things.

She suggests a version, which carries some risk as if the baby goes into distress or the cord is compressed/tears from placenta it will end up in an emergency c-section - so they won't attempt that until 37 weeks. Brent is afraid of the procedure but I say either way I'm getting a c-section, if we don't try it or we try it and it goes awry....and they can very quickly get the baby out if needed. I think versions have about a 50% success rate in new moms.

There are also positions etc. to try but I'm just afraid it won't flip back. It's only about a 3% occurence that babies are breech this late in pregnancy - it's more rare that baby was head down and flipped -many babies never even go head down.

So I'm consumed with this - I'm trying to see the bigger picture and focus on my baby coming and healthy either way it arrives, but I have to say I really don't want surgery and really want to deliver naturally. :(

UPDATE:

I just got back from my ultrasound. The technician was terrible to me, almost made me cry! I had to go to Mill Bay (about 20 minutes drive from where I work). First thing she did is ask why I'm there instewad of Madrona, where I had my last two ultrasounds. I explained that my midwife wanted to get me in asap and this was the first spot/place available. She said "so why exactly are you here?" I told her my midwife thinks baby is breech. She was putting the gel on me and I told her I didn't know sex and didn't want to. She says "I wouldn't tell you anyhow". I said "I meant warn me if you're going in that area and I'll look away". So she puts wand on me for a second (with screen away) and says "baby's head down." and stops. I asked if I could see, and she gives a giant sigh, turns the monitor to me for about 5 seconds then turns it away. I asked if she knew the approx size and she says "that's not what you're here for". I asked if I could have a picture and she says "there's nothing to take a picture of. You're free to go". So she turns her back to me and I was cleaning gel off my belly and after about 30 seconds she says "I said you're free to go Shannon". She made me feel so guilty for even being there wasting her time - as if it was my choice and what's it to her?!?!??

ANYHOW she kind of ruined what was a a happy moment - baby is head down :) so either my midwife was wrong (which I doubt) or the baby flipped - exercises I was doing may have helped. Which makes me wonder if my baby's small - in order to be moving so easily at this point...and will it filp again?

Anyhow I'm going to try to stay positive and prepare for my birth as I was planning :D

Tell me what her name is and I'll go teach her a lesson. Seriously relative. I will.

Did you file a complaint with the clinic. That is unbelieveable! I would be so upset.

That tech sounds like the biggest bitch ever, pardon my language....Sounds like a truly unhappy person.
Forget her, be happy that baby is the right way. So exciting. You are so close!

So glad to hear baby is now head down!! Too bad the technician had to ruin such a happy moment =/ It's always so aggravating when medical people act like you are just wasting their time!

I know it's possible it could turn but I'm getting emotionally prepared for the surgery now so I will be more accepting of it. Look up "external version" it's basically when a doctor tries to externally manouever the baby by turning it using his or her hands.......

Naw that sucks :(

Baby could still turn, my mid-husband said that babys can turn right before birth.

What is Version??
